The Learning Box offers high quality, engaging, child-specific support for primary school pupils.

We teach the national curriculum in innovative, inspiring ways through weekly small group mini classes, 1:1 intensive sessions and holiday workshops. Inspired by Miss Pickford’s love for English language and literature, The Writing Box workshops aim to guide children through their first steps as writers, readers and English enthusiasts. Success in this subject comes from an understanding of structure, a nurturing of confidence, and a familiarity of form, and our passionate teachers are equipped to inspire your children through their english journey, whatever the focus of the workshop may be.

At The Learning Box, we’ve always believed in the magic of picture books, not just for children, but for grown-ups too✨📚

They open up a million opportunities for creativity, conversation, writing, questioning, and critical thinking both inside and outside curriculum objectives.

Spent some time mapping out what we mean by “literacy support”. Our offerings have changed shape based on demand, interest & what the Little Stars we teach actually need, so it’s been fun to outline exactly what it is that we cover 🌟

Absolutely LOVED exploring Wangari’s Tree of Peace last week during our writing workshops.

This powerful story follows Wangari Maathai, the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, as she plants trees across Kenya to restore the environment and rebuild her community. Made even more special by the fact I climbed Mt Kenya at the end of last year! 🌞💛

Walking the same land Wangari worked so hard to protect made this story feel even more real and inspiring & made it that much more exciting to teach 🙏🏼

We explored how emotional ups and downs shape a narrative and how authors use structure to move readers emotionally through a story, ahead of playing around with our own writing opportunities.

2 weeks until we’re back in action at , running our Easter Holiday Writing Workshops ❤️💛💚💜💙🧡

1) Scrawling on tables, exploring how our senses can add texture & depth to our writing without pressure of right & wrong or good & bad 🤩
2) Celebrations from end of term workshops back in the day making me feel very nostalgic. Excited for that end of workshop feeling when everyone goes home with booklets full of words & stories to read to their families 🥹
3) BOOKLET EXPLORATION!! Behind the scenes of choosing stories & authors that inspire us & in turn, inspire the children we work with 👀
4) Magical snippets of children reading shortburst writes they have completed✨

Easter Holiday Writing Workshops

Our writing workshops are all about sparking creativity 🌈 and nurturing essential skills in a fun, supportive environment. Through picture books and interactive activities, your child will explore:

🖋️ How to craft captivating stories.
🗒️ Experimenting with different types of writing (from poetry to adventure tales!).
💡 Building confidence as a writer.

Whether they’re in Years 3 & 4 or Years 5 & 6, every child will leave feeling inspired and ready to tackle their next big idea.

📅 Week 1: Wednesday 9th, Thursday 10th, Friday 11th April (Year 3 & 4)
📅 Week 2: Monday 14th, Tuesday 15th, Wednesday 16th April (Year 5 & 6)

Today marks the end of our first week partnering with and to learn about their approaches to teaching literacy & deliver enriching workshops to children & teachers, developing reading & writing curriculums.
