🎃For most people, Halloween is all about dressing up, carving pumpkins, and indulging in sweet treats. For others, especially those with specific needs —such as those living with dementia, hearing loss, or people with autism— Halloween can be more stressful than fun.

People with additional needs may find themselves being left out of celebrations around this time of year. On top of the situations of exclusion they might already experience in their daily lives, this can lead them to feel very isolated. If you're spending time with people with specific needs, here are a few considerations you can make this Halloween fun for everyone and make all feel included.👻🎃🦇

Happy Diwali from SweetTree🎉💫!! Yesterday marked Bhai Dooj, the final day of Diwali and we were delighted to celebrate with our Hindu, Sikh and Jain colleagues. Over the past two days, we shared cultural food, painted candles and lit sparklers for the celebration of light.

Diwali is the Festival of Lights celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains. The celebration symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance.

Providing support for someone is incredibly valuable and rewarding, but it is important that as much as we prioritise caring for others, we equally prioritise caring for ourselves. You cannot pour from an empty cup, so in line with yesterday's World Mental Health Day, here are some tips to fill your own cup this month.

🍃Maintain Hobbies
It’s important to remember who you are outside of caregiving. Spending free time doing things that you enjoy can relieve stress, improve sleep and help you develop a sense of identity outside of care.

🍃Eat Well
Eating nutritious foods can increase your energy, reduce cognitive fog, improve alertness and productivity. Staying hydrated and eating nutritious food is important – a sweet treat can also be a form of self-care

🍃Support physical health
Looking after our physical health has real benefits and is a form of self-care. Finding ways in your day to move your body and keep active can help you release endorphins which relieve pain and stress. Boosting endorphin levels can improve mood, reduce anxiety and inflammation, and support overall health.

🍃Meet Other Caregivers
By meeting other caregivers and sharing stories, you can create a sense of community and relieve feelings of isolation. By meeting other caregivers and sharing stories, you can create a sense of community and relieve feelings of isolation.

🍃Ask for Help
Asking for help from someone you trust when you need it can reduce the burden of stress. This can be friends, family, or local services. If something doesn’t feel right with your body or mind, make an appointment to see your GP and let them know that you are a carer.

🍃Take regular breaks
You may find it hard to make time for yourself and or feel guilty, but it is responsible to prioritise a break from work. Taking regular time out may help you to cope. Even a short break, just an hour or two a week, can help you to recharge.

✊🏿To continue our celebration of black researchers for Black History Month and in commemoration of World Mental Health Day today, we’re recognising the research of Professor Dixon Chibanda and his contributions to mental health research and services.

🍃Zimbabwe, records consistently high rates of su***de, exceeding Sub-Saharan averages, while mental health receives just 0.42% of the total healthcare budget. In 2007, using over a decade of research on the delivery of mental health, Professor Dixon Chibanda founded the Friendship Bench

🍃The Friendship Bench is a community-based project, created to provide mental health care, safe spaces and a sense of belonging outside of healthcare settings. The team has trained over 2,000 community health workers to deliver a basic Cognitive Behavioural Intervention with an emphasis on Problem Solving Therapy, activity scheduling and peer-led group support.

🍃This support is provided to people with mild to moderate mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression, known locally as ‘kufungisisa,’ which translates to “thinking too much.”

🍃The Friendship Bench - Zimbabwe has led to a 78% reduction in depression and suicidal ideation and a 60% improvement in quality of life in Zimbabwe. The project has been successfully scaled to all 10 provinces in the country and replicated in other nations, including the USA, Vietnam, Malawi, Kenya, Zanzibar, and Jordan.

✊🏿We’re continuing our celebration of black researchers for this year’s Black History Month. This week, we’re recognising the research of Dr Patricia Bath and her contributions to eye care and surgery.

🍃In 1986, American ophthalmologist and humanitarian Patricia Era Bath invented the Laserphaco Probe, a device that revolutionized cataract surgery by using a laser to remove cloudy lenses more precisely and less invasively. Laser technology's precision also reduces the possibility of surgical mistakes, thus increasing success rates and improving the general results. Her invention restored sight to people who were previously almost entirely blind.

🍃She secured a patent for her invention in 1988 and became the first African American woman to do so for a medical device.

🍃After seeing that blindness was more common among black patients, she focused much of her career on improving access to eye care for underserved communities. She advocated for an idea she developed called “community ophthalmology” combining public health, community services, and clinical practice to improve eye care access for underprivileged populations.

🍃Unfortunately, she passed away in 2019 at age 76 due to complications from cancer.

✊🏿During this year’s Black History Month, we want to celebrate the black researchers who have contributed to our understanding of specialist care, informing how we respond to our clients' needs. This week, we’re recognising the research of Dr Bennet Omalu and his contributions to the study of brain injury.

🍃A Nigerian-American physician, forensic pathologist, and neuropathologist, Bennet Ifeakandu Omalu was the first to discover and publish research on Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) in American football players, a brain disease caused by brain trauma. In 2002, while working at the Allegheny County coroner's office, Pittsburgh, he identified CTE in the brain of deceased NFL player, Mike Webster. His findings revealed a unique pattern of abnormal tau protein accumulations in the brain, distinct from Alzheimer's disease.

🍃Although initially facing significant pushback and denial from the NFL, Omalu's research was instrumental in raising public awareness about the severe, long-term brain health risks associated with high-impact sports, profoundly impacting the understanding we now have of concussion-related injuries in sports.

Stay tuned for more Black History Month content❤️🖤💛💚
