Did you know that our gut microbiome has both a circadian as well as a seasonal rhythm and that certain types of bacteria are more abundant at certain types of the year? There are plenty of reasons for us to focus on eating foods that are in season where we live and, our gut microbiome’s seasonal variation is one of them. Research has for example shown that some types of bacteria which are known to help digest complex carbohydrates are naturally more abundant during summer months. On the contrary, certain bacteria negatively correlated with fibre intake have been found to be lower during summer months. There is still a lot for us to explore and learn about the gut microbiome and it’s impact on health, but this is another fascinating insight into the plasticity of the human gut microbiome and how eating in rhythm with circadian and seasonal variations can help support our health and wellbeing. Of course colder weather naturally calls for warming dishes, but this may give us another reason to put larger focus on cooking methods which naturally help break down plant fibres during colder months, supporting seasonal digestive health.
