( Didn’t think this needed saying but don’t blindly share this post, but think before sharing, my post is a personal journey as well as a sign of celebration during Black Breast feeding week )

Black breastfeeding week
Rooted in success
Grounded in community

My success story of 9.5 years (15/01/16-27/07/25)

We successfully got to 9.5 years because of the support of the people in our village/community, that’s not to say that any of my family were supportive in fact it was the opposite and they were quite verbal about it too 😢

Your nursing support community/village can be anyone in your life

The village/ community is a vital part of a nursing journey, they are the bra for the tata’s, the gravy for your meat, the food for your soul.

Without a supportive community the emotional load can be overwhelming and disruptive to your journey

Munch nursed through the happiness in his life, the adventures, while we travelled abroad, in the middle of the night, while watching tv, on a bus, at museums and parks and aquariums, through the illnesses and the many hospital visits and also through his ASD diagnosis

Munch has an amazing spark, he is sassy ( like his mama) an avid foodie, an animal lover, a parkour enthusiast, an eager learner and a loving soul.
My one regret is not taking enough nursing pictures from day one, most have been taken because I thought we were ending our journey

If is see a parent nursing, offer to take more pictures of their journey, support them authentically, be open to understanding their journey.

Whether a parent chooses to nurse for one day, one week or one year or longer they need support and understanding

Some of you may know that I am a firm advocate for informed, fact based care and support for parents and that I am also a big advocate for parents to be their authentic self and to do what they feel is best for their own family.

We’ll today I’m going to blow my own trumpet and say how proud I am to be a part of a photography series called the milk project showcasing nursing children outside the mainstream age of up to 1-2 yrs old.

I was super chuffed to see myself and munch on page 41 of the latest JUNO Magazine today as it arrived in the post 😍

We made the decision last week to end our nursing journey after an amazing 9.5 yrs.
It’s great to end on our own terms and on a positive note. Before we decided to stop munch was nursing maybe 1/2 times every 2/3 weeks so it wasn’t much of a transition for us.

Today me and munch are having a bye bye b***y party.

We have had a great journey but it is time to say bye bye to b***y time.

We would love to go natural term completely but due to me needing to take medication that we can’t nurse on we have made the decision to stop.

It has been an eye opener in many ways and I would not change our journey for all the money in the world.

We have a beautiful connective wholesome relationship and we have some amazing photos of our journey for us to look back on and remember.

9.5 yrs ago I never thought about breastfeeding Micah but look where we are now 🥰

I would like to thank everyone who has supported us on our journey, we wouldn’t be here without you and we love and thank you from the bottom of our hearts ♥️

Sending you all virtual b***y cupcakes to share in our celebration 🎉🎉

World cancer day is today 4th Feb

Few words from me a 48 year old woman ( I know I look sexy oh la la for my age don’t I 😉 )

Cancer affects everyone

I found a lump in my breast when I was 19, I was terrified and also in denial for a few weeks. Eventually I went to my dr and he fast tracked me to the hospital for further investigation, they decided to go for a biopsy but I opted for the limp to be removed as I knew that just knowing it was there while waiting for results would drive me crazy. While this was all happening there was other family issues going on, my paternal grandfather was also in hospital and it was touch and go whether he would make it, suffice to say I was masking and pretending I wasn’t cacking my panties about the result and because I was hiding my fears I internalised and no one around noticed what I was going through. Those weeks were some of the scariest of my life. Luckily it was just some fatty tissue and I was in the clear.

I had another scare when a routine smear came back inconclusive and I had to go for a check as I had some polyps in my uterus. This happened when I was 37. Luckily these were also nothing.
My maternal grandmother and maternal aunt have both had cancer, one had a breast removed and the other had invasive surgery so I am very scared every time I see lumps or have inconclusive test results.
Please check your family history and check yourselves, support your friends to investigate any abnormal lumps, or symptoms.
So far I’ve been lucky but know a few people who have not been so lucky.

I’m in awe of my friends and family that are battling Cancer and the lessons they are teaching me about embracing life and finding joy, love and support in the things around us

Today I salute you 👏🏾

Can’t believe my munchkin is going to be 9 tomorrow.

Tonight we are snuggling up in bed together talking about the past and remembering good times

January birthdays are hard especially if it’s a week after mine 😉
Both of us being Capricorn’s mean we do buck beads more often than I would like and we are both stubborn as hell 🤣

Luckily munch doesn’t mind the cold on his birthday and would love to wake up to snow on his birthday and is looking forward to toasted marshmallows over the bbq 🔥
He is also looking forward to his birthday bo***es tomorrow morning 🤣🤣🤣

9 years of Munch ….. I’m not sure how we got here but here we are.
I would not change him for my weight in gold and I’m a fat juicy mama🤣😂🤣😂

The Christmas tree is up

🎅🏾🎄

Representation matters in our home

Every year Munch will make a decoration for our tree, We also have a tradition of buying 1 decoration for the tree.

Each year we add 1 decoration and each decoration has a special memory attached to it and as we put them on the tree we remember when and where we bought each one.

Do you have a Christmas tree tradition?

When nursing sometimes we have random find lumps and bumps that we ignore and assume it’s milk related

Check for lumpkins, or bumpkins or whatever you call them regularly not just for Halloween

Mastitis

This week I have been silently battling with Mastitis

I realised something was going on with the globes of glory Wednesday night.

They were feeling sensitive and sore but as i am hard headed and de-nial is the river I swim in, I ignored the symptoms and carried on with my day.

Thursday I had to do a talk to some infant feeding professionals so I couldn’t bail, I carried on as if nothing was wrong but was starting to feel flu like symptoms. I aced the talk and went home and then crashed for 3 hours.

Friday I had home Ed cooking with the kiddos and couldn’t bail so I soldiered on again. Afterwards I crashed and slept again for 2.5 hrs

FRIDAY night my b***s were humongous and sore, ni***es were very angry with me and they were not shy in telling me.
So I took some extra strength paracetamol and grabbed the cabbages from the fridge and went to sleep.
Paracetamol and cabbages have been on rotation the last 24 hrs or so

Munch has been helping relieve the engorged feeling but he is finding it harder to latch on

Is this the end ………?
Maybe 🤷🏽‍♀️

It’s been almost 9 years of our b***y story and I’m not sad if this is the end, munch has been latching on once or twice a fortnight anyway…….

I sit here on the sofa with huge, sore, painful b***s and am thinking of all those who are sharing my experience.

This doesn’t mean it’s the end for you, there is solidarity in knowing someone out there in b***y land is experiencing the same and we are all here for you and supporting you through your journey through mastitis
For my black and brown family I’m here for you too👊🏽
