In October 2024, the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine I’M WOMAN Trial team visited sites in Tanzania and witnessed firsthand how simple it could be to administer a life-saving drug for treating severe bleeding after childbirth ( ).

⏰ Intravenous TXA injection takes up to 10 minutes and needs a high level of clinical training.

💉Imagine if giving tranexamic acid (TXA) could be as easy as an injection into the muscle. Intramuscular administration is faster, more efficient, and requires less training for healthcare workers.

The trial teams in Tanzania, Nigeria and Pakistan aim to expand access to this life-saving drug so more women can be treated and maternal deaths reduced.

The I’M WOMAN Trial team in Tanzania pledged to improve access to tranexamic acid (TXA) to reduce maternal deaths that result from severe postpartum bleeding.

How will they apply it to their roles? Doctors, nurses and midwives from the trial team pledge to:

- Administer TXA within three hours of birth
- Raise awareness of TXA for reducing life-threatening bleeding
- Recruit more eligible women to the trial

🤝 collaborating with ten hospital sites, including the University of Dar es Salaam College of Health and Allied Sciences and Mbeya Zonal Referral Hospital.
