Chemotherapy and hair loss:

Hair loss due to chemotherapy typically begins within a few weeks after the start of treatment, though the exact timing can vary depending on the specific drugs used and the individual's response to treatment. Hair loss may continue throughout the course of chemotherapy and may persist for some time after treatment has ended. However, not every type of chemotherapy leads to hair loss.

The extent and severity of chemotherapy-induced hair loss can vary widely among individuals and depends on several factors, including the type and dosage of chemotherapy drugs, the individual's overall health, and genetics. Hair loss can range from thinning and shedding to complete hair loss, and it may affect not only the scalp but also eyelashes, eyebrows, body hair, and facial hair. Both telogen effluvium and anagen effluvium can be seen during chemotherapy. The hair often recovers shortly after chemotherapy is stopped. However, the recovery would then depend on the patient’s well-being and medication taken at the time.

What happens in a consultation with a Trichologist?

The consultation process is very thorough and may take up to an hour. During the consultation, all aspects of your scalp/hair problem will be discussed at length to determine the correct diagnosis of your condition. The Trichologist will go through your full medial history, and discuss a range of aspects of your lifestyle. This can include: your diet, family history, any stress you may be under and any medications you may be on. The Trichologist will then conduct a thorough examination of your hair and scalp, which may include the use of a scalp microscope or magnifying glass.

The hair follicle is incredibly sensitive to changes in the body, so hormonal changes can contribute to hair loss.

There are a range of conditions that may cause both permanent or temporary hair loss, including hormonal changes due to puberty, pregnancy, childbirth, menopause and thyroid problems.
