πŸ’‘ My colleague, peer and friend shared the news with me today. We discussed just how powerful some of Steven's reflections were for us, in his recent post.

Here's to all the people feeling the fear and doing the work anyway πŸ’«πŸ™πŸ½

✨ It was just an average Friday. I woke up with a huge spot on my nose, saw clients in my clinic and did a load of admin! But everything changed at 17:30 when the hard copy of the book I co-authored was delivered at the same time I found out I received a distinction for my first year at uni (yes I'm back again). πŸ™ŒπŸ½

πŸ‹ The sky is never the limit! Be clear about your goals. Accept opportunities and work out upskilling later. And relentlessly pause or discard anything that gets in your way. When life throws you lemons, cry, scream, go to therapy and then make your damn lemonade!

πŸ₯‚ Celebrating my wins with you!

πŸ’« P.S., attend our book launch and buy the book! My chapter is on reclaiming self-care and I share pages with some amazing women! Links are in my bio so check them out now!! Thank you always to the book editor and author as well as our publishing editor Catherine and publisher

πŸŽ“ I'm celebrating a win with you today!

As of October I became a registered Psychotherapist with the BABCP in the UK and I graduated a few weeks ago! Not only did I graduate, I graduated top of all CBT cohorts at Herts, averaging the hightest grade for 2022.

I didn't celebrate much at the time due to illness but I wanted to share some of the hurdles and detours I overcame to get where I am now. With every achievement there are countless loses we never talk about but directly contribute to the grit and motivation of our successes.

1. I didn't learn to read and write properly until I was 8, I was quite delayed and still have trouble spelling now. But this is my 4th degree. If you want it, make it.

2. Because I was told and believed for so long that I was not able enough to undertake academic subjects I stuck to what I knew best growing up and applied myself to creative fields, starting in fashion and gaining my first degree in graphic design. But I wanted different so I changed my career trajectory.

3. My career change put be behind many of my peers and people questioned the 'risk' I was taking starting again. The only risk for me was staying in my comfort zone working on branding and Ads that didn't align with me. I applied myself and completed further studies over the past 9 years, working in education, physical and mental healthcare.

4. At the beginning of this year the UK government proposed an unethical and inhumane vaccination mandate which I strongly fought to oppose nearly leaving me dismissed from not just my NHS Trust or clinical work but a 9 year career in psychology. I stuck to my principles. The mandate was overturned. I took time for my mental wellbeing and I'm now working with a leading neuropsychiatric service in Europe.

If I could share any nuggets from my learnings to you, or somehow speak to 10 or 20 year old me, it would be to learn to trust our intuition, always navigate life by our intrinsic values, be integral. Do work beyond self-interest and capitalism. Don't give up on things we want for ourselves or our communities, no matter how out of reach goals seem. Don't allow our pasts to dictate our futures.

🚨 Well good evening!

I will be speaking next week, Tuesday 29th November, at The Black Conference, brought to you by . Tickets are free on Eventbrite, search The Black Conference or check out the posts on their page to book! 400 tickets already gone, so get on it!

I can’t wait to share my thoughts and experiences in relation to all things wellbeing related alongside Nana Owusu; clinical lead and director of children and young peoples services, HF Mind πŸ–€

The conference agenda looks amazing with other contributions on topics such as education, social justice, inclusion, the creative industry, film, entrepreneurship, motherhood, women and business, women in sports and fitness and sickle cell. Plus a variety of keynotes and conversations from , other black industry professionals and allies.

We are keeping the conversation going! Breaking stereotypes about black people, challenging injustice, highlighting and dismantling systemic racism. ✊🏽

✨ I can’t put into words the high I feel after co-hosting the the yesterday alongside founder, organiser and host .psychotherapist It was a fantastic lineup of speakers with varying discussions on Black women, trauma and mental health, such as motherhood, girlhood and surviving violence. Thanks also to our fantastic webcasting team, particularly Ian & Craig! This is the 3rd year I have worked with all of you and it’s just not possible for me put all my gratitude into words.

πŸŒ™ I’ll just summarise that I felt very privileged to share the conference with so many knowledgeable and authentic Black women, steering the way in healthcare, psychology, psychotherapy, education and research. I felt proud to represent the amazing delegates who shared their reflections, ideas and thought provoking questions and hope I conveyed your thoughts adequately! Thank you all for purchasing your tickets, it means this space can continue to grow.

πŸ’« The final panel topic was β€˜finding your voice’ and overall what I’ve taken from it is to continue using mine. Despite not particularly liking the privatisation and politics of social media, I will to continue to take up space. I’ll continue to use all of the platforms available to me to share my voice, to share my multi-passionate personality. I’ll continue contributing to challenging stereotypes; dismantling systemic injustice, prejudice and racism. I’ll continue breaking down the colonialist monolith of the Black woman and I’ll continue using my voice for equity, equality and community. We will be seen and we will be heard.
