How to dress your baby comfortably?
Two simple rules:
1. Dress in adjustable layers
Choose outfits that make it easy to add or remove clothing depending on the situation. Several light
layers work better than one thick garment. For example, a bodysuit, a onesie, and a light cardigan
allow you to adjust your baby’s comfort quickly. If your baby gets too warm, you can remove a
layer without un******ng them completely. A single thick sweater, on the other hand, may be too
warm, while removing it could leave your baby feeling cold.
A blanket is also a great extra layer. It’s especially practical when moving between different
environments, such as going in and out of buildings or shops.
2. One layer more than you
A helpful reference point is your own outfit. If you’re wearing a T-shirt, sweater, and jacket, your
baby will usually need the same layers plus one extra. In warm summer weather, when a T-shirt
feels enough for you, two light layers are often sufficient for your baby. During very hot days, many
babies are comfortable in just one breathable layer.
Helpful tips:
• Hands and feet can feel cool even when a baby is comfortable, so instead of relying only on them,
check the back of the neck to gauge body warmth.
• Newborns loose heat more quickly than older babies, so they may need an extra layer or a light
hat, especially in cooler conditions.
Finally, remember that advice from others (family, friends, or neighbours can sometimes be
overwhelming). Trust your instincts. You know your baby best, and by pausing to consider the
surrounding temperature and your baby’s comfort, you’ll be able to make the right choice with
confidence.
