a few fixes for the overthinkers that want to invite in a little more calmness.

🫂if you’re feeling anxious, try box breathing. Imagine a box/square, inhale left side 4, hold along the top 4, exhale right side 4, hold along the bottom for 4. Try 7 rounds.

🫂and when my mind is loud and i cant relax i set an intention, my reason why, a purpose. That reframes things and when i think about what came before or what comes after it helps me land back to the present.

🫂not many people are good at sitting still, me included. shake, stretch, dance or move before you decide to sink into stillness. You’ll find you’ve shaken off the excess energy and feel less fidgety.

🫂google just told me we have 6,000 thoughts per day, 95% of them being repetitive and many leaning toward negativity- that’s crazy! No wonder we all feel like we’re about to explode, grab your journal and get some of them out.

which one will you try?

its not one pose for every(body), we all need a variation and its not a weakness. i know when you first start yoga it can feel like you need to do every pose the teachers gives or even keep up with the person on the mat next to you but its okay to skip, change and modify.

🌞 opting for a low lunge instead of a high lunge is often an option but you can do the same for your warrior 2, drop the back knee and i actually think its a better stretch on the on inner thigh. the other amazing thing is that you can do kneeling warrior 2, extended side angle, triangle and half moon from here so you don’t have to miss your warrior sequence just modify the whole thing.

🌞 downward facing dog is a staple in most classes but i see so many struggle with this one including me sometimes! bend your knees and lift your heels to take the pressure off the lower half of the body, use blocks under the hands to relieve the under body!

🌞 updog is a very common backbend in a vinyasa class, i always offer cobra too but what if being on your belly isn’t an option at all? then cow is your bestie, you get a backbend, no pressure on the abdomen and softer on the back body.

🌞 pigeon can become figure four, seated or reclined both are great for stretching the IT band + releasing the lower back. it also stretches the piriformis muscle which if you have sciatica this may feel good for you!

i have sooo many variations but i’ll leave it there for now, what pose would you like to see a variation of?

giving my students the options and knowledge to make the choices that are right for their body is key in my classes.

🤍downward facing dog can be a resting pose for some and for others it’s not. some days it’s my peace, others i don’t have the strength for it. swap it for child’s pose or any other aligned resting post. i like to just sit up right on my heels too😎

🤍being able to touch your toes seems to be the bench mark for a good yoga practice but if we are straining our hamstrings and rounding our back then we’re doing more harm than good. just bend your knees, please.

🤍binding simply doesn’t work for some bodies including me on one side. grabbing a strap gives me a better stretch and alignment. using props isn’t a weakness.

🤍you can’t do crow? get out 🚪. it doesn’t matter i promise, swap it for malasana, give it a go, admire the person next to you, do anything but beat yourself up for not being able to do it.

🤍 savasana the final pose of the practice, often taught lying on your back legs and arms straight. injury & trauma can make this inaccessible for some and as teachers it’s important to offer different variations. if being on your back isn’t an option at all you can sit up.

i love my journal and meditating but some times you just need to be unhinged and feral.

not many of us have the luxury of attending a 60minute yoga class everyday to release tension but there is a few things you can do everyday and it’ll only take you a few minutes.

-save for the next time you need to reset 🫶🏽

debunking some of the yoga myths that terrorise me on a weekly basis.

❌yoga is for women
✔️historically yoga was for men to help strengthen their mind and body for war. the west has reframed it as a practice for women or a feminine thing to do, it’s not

❌you need to be flexible
✔️have you ever considered the people doing yoga that seem flexible are that way because they do lots of yoga? of course the practice attracts a lot of dancers / gymnasts because of similarities in movements but being flexible never was or is a requirement

❌your mind is too active to do yoga
✔️that’s the whole point, you come to yoga with a busy mind and leave feeling lighter. it’s not about arriving fully healed, give me something to work with lol

❌you need a specific outfit
✔️wear what you’re comfortable in, i often show up in a tracksuit or some kind of flowy pants. you don’t need to buy anything new to go to a class. come as you are and if someone is judging your outfit they’re not being very yogi🙈

what’s a yoga myth you hear?👀
