What's your favourite 'perk' of breastfeeding?

A fabric womb made by Angélique du Coudray, a French midwife who was commissioned by King Louis XV to reduce infant mortality. From 1760 to 1783, she traveled all over France, visiting poor rural women and sharing her extensive knowledge with them. It is estimated that she trained some 10,000 women.
Du Coudray also invented the first lifesize obstetrical mannequin, for practicing mock births, and published a well-received midwifery textbook

What's my life experience and training?

When I was in high school, I knew that I wanted to help others but I wondered how I could. Even though I was lost, I wanted to do something that was more personal and one to one with those that needed help. I started my studies at university but unfortunately the educational institution was far too impersonal and distant. Instead, I decided to take a gap year and I became a masseuse. I discovered that I preferred to have my own business over working for others. This provided me with the ability to implement and practice my values and principles, when it comes to the importance of the client and their care.

This interest in helping others would lean into my fascination with biology. Specifically in embryology, understanding menstrual cycles and basically everything around the feminine reproductive organs. I had the dream of one day becoming a midwife but due to the degree qualification and the cost that would entail back in Spain I was never able to pursue it. Instead, I did a professional course specializing in medical imaging and I became a X-ray and nuclear medicine technician. Even though I love learning more about the human body, during my apprenticeship I decided that it wasn’t for me. This is primarily because I believe that patients are more than just numbers.

After that, I moved to London with a view to improve my English and gain some more life experiences. In order to achieve that, I chose to work in childcare as an au pair for a family so I could be fully engrossed in English culture.
Then I did some research online, I discovered what a doula was. Also, in the UK you can have the opportunity of making your own business and work and live as a doula. So, I started my journey as a doula with Developing Doulas and my dream is starting to become true.

Why do I do what I do?

Because a good start makes a big difference. I understand the importance of early childhood care and how crucial it can be for the future of the family and the child. In short, I care about people.

At the same time, I’m fascinated by the miracle of pregnancy, creating a new life from a bunch of cells. And then labour, being able to give birth to a whole human being. We give a lot of our body and mind, and still we are able to carry on with our lives, recover from it and even do it all over again. It’s true that we need an egg, s***m and a favourable condition to create an embryo and a lot of factors, that we can not control, can interfere with it during the pregnancy. Also, we may request some assistance during childbirth but we are still doing the hard work.

I believe that we deserve better maternity care and more recognition for the wonder of childbirth. We need clarity of communication and more empathy between humans, especially when there is a baby on the way.
This is why I do what I do as a doula. I want to do the best I can with the information I have to ensure that the baby comes to the most loving and supportive environment.

Please don't hesitate to send me a message or leave a comment and let's cultivate a more compassionate maternity service.
