Junior Self Defence (JSD) Programme
Many junior martial arts programmes attempt to adapt adult systems for children. While often well intentioned, these approaches can rely on techniques that are unrealistic for young people to apply, or that require levels of physical strength, judgement, and emotional maturity still in development.
The Junior Self Defence (JSD) Programme is founded on a more realistic and responsible premise:
If a child experiences aggression or bullying, it is most likely to involve another child of similar age, size, and physical ability.
For this reason, the JSD curriculum is specifically designed to be age-appropriate, practical, and immediately applicable within the context of junior peer interactions.
Training Approach
Striking and kicking skills are introduced primarily through structured, non-contact training. Students work with focus pads and kicking shields to develop correct mechanics, coordination, balance, and control in a safe and progressive manner.
This training establishes a technical foundation in preparation for more advanced striking and kicking disciplines introduced from age 14 onwards.
In addition, students participate in carefully supervised and controlled sparring sessions, designed to develop distance management, timing, awareness, and emotional control. Safety, structure, and appropriate conduct are strictly maintained at all times.
Non-striking self-defence skills are taught alongside this training, ensuring a balanced and comprehensive approach to personal safety education.
Developmental Benefits
Parents of students enrolled in the JSD Programme consistently report a range of positive outcomes, including:
Increased confidence and self-assurance
Improved focus, discipline, and behaviour
Enhanced fitness, coordination, and posture
Stronger social skills and peer relationships
A sense of belonging within a structured, positive environment
All training is delivered in a safe, respectful setting that supports both personal development and enjoyment.
A Purpose-Built Junior Curriculum
While individual techniques may be informed by established martial arts systems, the curriculum structure, progression framework, and instructional methodology are entirely our own.
This ensures training remains relevant to each child’s stage of development, while also fostering essential life skills such as responsibility, resilience, self-discipline, and respect.
The objective of the JSD Programme is twofold:
to equip junior students with the skills they need now to manage peer conflict and bullying, and to establish a strong foundation for long-term martial arts development.
An Investment in Your Child’s Development
Introducing appropriate self-defence training, structure, and discipline at an early age supports children in navigating school and social environments with greater confidence and awareness.
This programme is not solely preparation for future training—it is a considered response to the challenges children face today.
2-Week Trial Programme
Parents are invited to enrol their child in a 2-week trial programme, allowing them to experience the JSD Programme with no obligation to continue.
