For many people with asthma, the COVID-19 pandemic has been especially frightening.

Although there is not an overwhelming amount of evidence that those with asthma are at high risk of contracting COVID-19 specifically, we know that asthmatic patients are generally more susceptible to infections and suffer from more severe complications than those without.

In this blog post, we talk about the facts surrounding asthma and COVID-19, including what to do if you have asthma and contract the virus: www.chestclinic.co.uk/blog/covid-19-and-asthma-what-to-do-if-you-have-asthma-during-the-pandemic/

Breathlessness is a symptoms of many different conditions. It is most likely related to respiratory issues, but can also be a sign of heart failure, amongst other life-threatening health problems.

Breathlessness is not normal, and should be investigated. This is why we conduct a number of different in-depth tests to form an accurate diagnosis and prescribe the treatment that you need.

It may be that the root cause of the condition is something other than a respiratory problem, which is when we can refer you to another specialist for treatment.

Why do I wake up with my heart pounding?

This occurs when you stop breathing, and your oxygenation drops to below normal, healthy levels. This causes the heart to react by speeding up, missing a beat or adding an extra beat.

Its most common cause is obstructive sleep apnoea, which affects an estimated 1.5 million adults in the UK.

Our sleep physician provides more info on this symptoms, and answers other common sleep questions, in our blog post: www.chestclinic.co.uk/blog/sleep-problems-our-sleep-physician-answers-your-questions/

Dr Bernadette Coker, expert in sleep disorders, answers your questions about sleep problems, from insomnia, waking up in the night, pounding heart & more.

Eczema affects more people than you might think. Atopic eczema (the most common type) affects 1 in 5 children and 1 in 12 adults in the UK.

Although eczema can be easily diagnosed by a specialist, it can often be confused with other conditions. Therefore, it's important to avoid self-medicating, as it may worsen symptoms.

If you suspect that you, or your child, has a skin condition such as eczema, read more about how effective treatment can help, here: www.chestclinic.co.uk/what-we-treat/allergies/eczema/

You are not necessarily born with a food intolerance - they can develop as you age, and can often occur after a stressful life event, surgery or illness.

However, because the symptoms of food intolerances can mimic those of other conditions, it is important to get tested as soon as you notice something abnormal, such as a skin rash, bloating or fatigue.

In our blog post, we talk about the facts that you may not know about food intolerances, and how you can get treatment: www.chestclinic.co.uk/blog/food-intolerances-symptoms-tests-treatments/

Breathlessness is an uncomfortable sensation which can make you feel as if you are unable to breathe normally. You may feel out of breath or winded, and this can be accompanied by other symptoms such as:

• Wheezing
• Chest pains or a feeling of heaviness in the chest
• Elevated heart rate
• Perspiration
• Blue skin, particularly around your mouth or hands
• Nausea
• Dizziness
• Cough
• Nasal congestion and headaches

You should make an appointment to see a specialist if you notice changes in your breathing. It is important not to delay seeking medical help, as it may be difficult to reverse some conditions that cause long-term breathlessness if treatment has been delayed.

LONG COVID ASSESSMENT PACKAGE (£300)

Our long COVID assessment package is designed to assess your symptoms. This includes a face-to-face consultation with physical examination.

We recommend 24hr ambulatory oxygen monitoring, also known as pulse oximetry (£185) to measure the oxygen levels in your blood, however, this is optional. Some patients may also need a spirometry test (additional £130 if required).

You will be emailed your results, diagnosis, recommended treatments and further tests (if required) by our respiratory consultant.

You can then decide how you wish to proceed beyond this stage based on your individual diagnosis.
