over 90 hours without food - a personal story meets peer-reviewed science
Just water, minerals, homeopathy and daylight.

So let me tell you what the science says is actually happening inside my kidneys right now, after all – it’s World Kidney Day today 💚

Peer-reviewed research published in PMC confirms autophagy is critical to kidney homeostasis and protection against chronic kidney disease progression.
By day 4:
→ NRF2, my kidneys' master antioxidant pathway is fully activated
→ mTOR, linked to kidney disease progression is deeply suppressed
→ Anti-fibrotic, stem cell regeneration signals are rising
→ Aldosterone is low, therefore blood pressure is naturally reduced.
And yes - creatinine rises temporarily during extended fasting but it's not kidney damage. It normalises on refeeding, the research on 11-day water fasting confirms this.
I share this not to advocate extended fasting for everyone. If you have CKD, diabetes, or take blood pressure or blood sugar medication, this is not your path without direct medical supervision.

You can simply take my free Kidney Health assessment quiz and start where your results point to: https://kidney-health-score.scoreapp.com

I share this because I believe your body has extraordinary capacity to repair and because today, World Kidney Day, is about awareness. About the 1 in 10 people who have kidney disease and don't know it.

Happy World Kidney Day. Your kidneys have been working for you every second of every day – Appreciate them! 💚

70 hours into my fast, and my kidneys are lowkey the unsung heroes of this whole saga.
Tomorrow is and I've made you a FREE quiz to find out how well YOUR kidneys are being supported, take it now: https://kidney-health-score.scoreapp.com

Meanwhile I'll be here, floating somewhere between ketosis and enlightenment, waiting to see if the smell of my husband's Friday breakfast breaks me 😂

"I have bad genes for kidney disease, so there's nothing I can do."
I hear this a lot as a functional nutritionist, and I have to be honest - the science says otherwise - your DNA is more of a suggestion than a sentence.

🧬 Epigenetics studies how external factors - what you eat, how you sleep, how stressed you are, what toxins you're exposed to, literally alter HOW your genes are expressed without changing the DNA sequence itself.
Think of it like a dimmer switch on your genes. Your lifestyle determines whether the "kidney-protective" genes are dimmed down or turned up bright.

Here's what some of the research shows for kidney health specifically:
- Sleep deprivation of just 1 week has been shown to alter methylation patterns in genes linked to kidney filtration.

- What your mother ate during pregnancy may have programmed YOUR kidney nephron count (filtering units) before you were even born, affecting lifelong kidney resilience. (Yes, really - this is called the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease, or DOHaD.)

- Chronic stress doesn't just feel bad, it activates inflammatory gene expressions that can accelerate kidney aging.

- Fasting for healing activates autophagy pathways that help clear damaged kidney cells

The exciting part? Many of these epigenetic changes are reversible. You are not a passive recipient of your genetic inheritance.

Specific foods like berberine-rich herbs, omega-3s, and sulforaphane from broccoli sprouts, have measurable effects on kidney-protective gene expression. You're not stuck with the hand you were dealt, you are, quite literally, writing your next chapter.

💬 Did you know epigenetics could affect kidney health? Tell me what surprised you most

Happy International Women’s Day. 💗
Let’s celebrate women the way women actually deserve to be celebrated with science that takes us seriously.
Because this is real - kidney disease presents differently in women, progresses differently, and is diagnosed later. And the reasons why are rooted in both biology and a decades-long gap in gender-inclusive medical research.
The science that should be talked about more:
! Oestrogen is renoprotective. It actively reduces inflammation in kidney tissue and protects the glomerular filtration barrier. Which means... menopause is a genuine kidney health event. Post-menopausal women experience measurable declines in GFR (filtration rate) and almost nobody warns them.
! Auto-immune kidney disease is, disproportionately, a women’s health issue. Lupus, which affects women at 9 times the rate of men is one of the leading causes of lupus nephritis, a serious kidney condition..
! Pregnancy is a stress test for the kidneys. Pre-eclampsia and gestational hypertension don’t just disappear after birth, women who experience them have significantly elevated lifetime CKD risk. This is rarely communicated at postnatal checkups.
! Women are more likely to be told their fatigue, swelling, and brain fog are anxiety, stress, or hormonal when these are also textbook early-stage kidney disease symptoms.
We don’t need softer health conversations.
We need more accurate ones.
On International Women’s Day - know your body, know your kidneys.
Because knowledge is the most radical thing a woman can have.
💬 Share this with the women in your life.

When your OCD traits are NOT contained to the dishwasher…
Hyper-vigilance and correction may feel like control but biologically it’s chronic STRESS.
And chronic stress always collects interest.
Over time that leads to cortisol overload, burnout, and chronic fatigue.
You don’t have to accept that as “just how you are.”
A regulated nervous system changes everything.

Want to enhance the hard work your body is doing while fasting?

Support your elimination pathways.

Fasting mobilises stored waste but if it doesn’t leave the body, it can recirculate.

✔ Hydrate with electrolytes
✔ Move your lymph
✔ Support bowel regularity
✔ Breathe deeply (detox through lungs too)
✔ Sweat wisely

Release is step one.
Removal is step two.

Fasting for healing, not for harm.
Follow for smarter, biology-first fasting guidance.

Pancake day in a gluten-free household hits different when you’re a functional nutritionist.
I have 3 non-negotiable breakfast rules and they don’t take a day off. Not even today.
1. Savoury. Sweet spikes, savoury sustains. 2. Protein-dense. Feed your brain enough and it won’t come begging for snacks an hour later. 3. Gluten free. Obviously.
golden, filling, and genuinely satisfying – filling is a personal choice 💚

Fasting should feel empowering not punishing.

If you want to fast smarter, aligned with your hormones, autoimmunity, and DNA… follow me.
We do healing strategically here.

Fluffy gluten-free pancakes aren’t about complicated ingredients.
They’re about air, structure, patience…and love
2 organic eggs
4 tbsp arrowroot powder
1 tbsp coconut blossom sugar
1/8 tsp cream of tartar
1/8 tsp unrefined sea salt
(in the video I make a double dose)

Save this for your next slow morning.
And yes… make it heart-shaped for the one you love 🤍

12 weeks.
There is no “just a little bit” when it comes to gluten. It takes 12 weeks to leave your system. 12 weeks of healing... gone. If you’re doing the work, don’t let one moment undo it all. You’ve come too far. 🤍
