A list of other hard things includes:
- trusting someone with your love
- sitting still long enough to get bored
- building a business from scratch
- going to live in another country by yourself
- putting yourself in situations where you know you could be rejected
- doing things you know you have a high chance of failing because if you know that if you fail, you’ll have gained experience and if you succeed, well you’ll have succeeded (I don’t think I need to put that any other way)
- doing things that the people around you aren’t doing despite knowing that it would be easier to just follow the crowd
- saying no to things that would solve today’s frustrations while creating tomorrow’s problems

Slowing down doesn’t mean you stop

It’s not about never doing what you love, or enjoying life
But sometimes I do think we avoid looking at the things that are secretly eating away at our resources, while we complain about never having enough time/money/energy

This year I gave up competitive powerlifting and pole dancing

Does that mean I no longer strength train or dance?
No.

It just means that I don’t spend excessive amounts of my time, money and energy doing them at a competitive level

So that I can focus on my business and my health in a way that aligns with my values and goals

Where are you ‘leaking’ time, money or focus on things that don’t fully align with your goals?

The things that make you feel good in the moment, but that distract you from what makes you fulfilled in the long-term?

It might be an uncomfortable question to answer, but I think it’s an important one for those of us trying to build something that has the potential for changing lives and positively impacting the world we live in 💜

*by squat to press here I mean the kind of squat to press you see people doing on the gym floor thinking they’re doing strength training

I’m not talking about DB thrusters or other variants as part of high intensity conditioning/finishers etc

It’s very rare that someone will be able to lift exactly the same weight for the same numbers of reps and it be challenging for both the squat and the overhead press if we’re talking about resistance training

And as a person who has work to get back to, I wouldn’t want to be wasting my time doing things that are ineffective and inefficient

For a long time, friendship felt like something I fit in once I’d handled everything else

Especially as someone who values growth but found myself in groups that didn’t inspire me

Not because they weren’t beautiful people, but just because we had different interests and priorities

I don’t think it’s something we talk about enough,

and I still carry the guilt of drifting from some lovely people because honestly I felt more tired than energised spending time with them

Somewhere along the way I stopped having these kinds of moments because I’d stopped investing in friendships

And now that I work from home a lot more, I can find myself going days without a proper hug or deep belly laughs

I would definitely still rather be by myself than with people who drain my energy

But I’m also so so grateful for Rose and some of the inspiring women I’m meeting in this next chapter of my life

I did a lot of letting go last year, and now it’s time for growth

And part of that means investing in relationships that are full of love and support

Women DESERVE strength

Our businesses NEED us to have the capacity to show up every day

We owe it to our families to prioritise our health so that we can look after them for as long as possible, not the other way around

Short-term dopamine and feel good sessions don’t reduce stress in the long run

Especially when they take you away from the things that actually matter without giving you the return you think you’re getting

I’m doing my best to say this in as many ways as I can…

Strength and CV fitness (alongside good food, good sleep, a mission in life and healthy relationships) build your capacity in ways that simply CANNOT be replaced

Make those your baselines

Sometimes it’s not too much, it’s just not aligned with what you need

Take some time to move a bit slower today (it’s Sunday as I’m posting this) so that your body has time to process what’s working and what’s not

Self awareness is like a muscle that can be trained - with patience and reps
