Recently made this beautiful family tree gift that places a loved one at the focal point, in the centre. Known named ancestors spread down, back in time, from the centre, to the roots of the tree; and future generations appear in the branches and leaves closer to the top of the tree. I can craft something similar for you if you like :-)

Taking a guess on the age or era of person in a photo through their hair style or clothes can be a fun way to get to know more about ancestors, and it is relatively easy to research. Love these looks...and seeing the changes in facial hair over the years. From a from neat buttoned up 1950s man to the dudes with bushy moustaches. Next stop: beards!

Here's a snippet from a recent family history leaflet I researched and designed for Brent Museum & Archives. It shares untold local hsitory (in this case the history of three wonderful Victorian women of the Welsh Harp).

I spent time researching at the local archives and lovingly turned the stories I found into fun, colourful and engaging fold-out leaflets.

If she was alive, today would have been my grandma's 100th birthday. Here she is looking gorgeous in her war-time wedding photo. She was only 19! And here's their marriage certificate too. Curiously, my grandfather (who was always 'Jack Bourne' to me) is named Lt. Isaac Hyam Baum on the certificate. A little research showed he changed the family name to Bourne in 1951. He was one of many East End Jews who changed their names to sound more 'English'. Name changes in families make it tricky for research - but solving all kinds of mysteries is half the fun.

I'm Caroline and I run WhoStoryUK. I have spent my career telling stories from the past, digging into what makes towns, cities and the people who live in them unique. I love rolling up my sleeves and getting stuck into dusty books, archives and hidden materials. From the gems I have found, I create beautifully designed family trails and colourful stories. I set up WhoStoryUK to inspire more people to dig into the connections to the amazing, sometimes unexpected, past and I hope this is the start of something special!

My hands down favourite online historic archive is the www.oldbaileyonline.org. It not only lists the crimes committed by individuals (you can simply search a name) but in many cases the transcripts from the court - and the sentences dished out. Brilliant for getting a flavour of life in Georgian or Victorian London. Tolerance for petty crime was extremely low in the 18th century. You'll find people being carted off to Australia for stealing a scarf.
