If you’re struggling to let go, ask yourself: What are you holding on to? The way things were? The hope they’ll return? Or the fear of what comes next?

The first step is to establish what’s keeping you stuck; then, you can begin to untangle yourself and move forward.

How much of the negativity is not the stress but our perception of it?

Stress exists to protect us, it’s a survival mechanism. When cortisol and adrenaline are released, their purpose is to give us the energy to meet the demands placed upon us.

But because stress can feel overwhelming, our focus often shifts to the discomfort of stress rather than the situation it’s trying to help us resolve.

When we shift our focus from the sensation to the solution, stress becomes an ally, not an obstacle.

When emotions rise, the body reacts with tightness, tension, or restlessness. Instead of spiraling in your mind, focus on your body.

Here’s how to regulate:
1. Notice the felt sense of the emotion, it might feel like a contraction, tension, or tightness in the shoulders, chest, jaw?
2. Take a slow, deep breath and release the tension.
3. If you’re tense, soften. If you’re restless, go for a walk.

Emotions manifest in the body, giving us an opportunity to regulate them through breath, movement, or relaxation. In this, the body becomes a gateway to calming the mind and creating emotional balance.

There are moments, fleeting but powerful, where you see it, clear as day. You don’t have to keep being who you thought you were. You don’t have to keep living out the same stories.

Stories you’ve carried for years “I’m not good enough,’ ‘I’ll always be like this,’ ‘This is just who I am.’
You might have accepted them once, even thought you’d overcome them, only to find subtler ones still hiding beneath.

When you see them like this, you realise they’re just stories. Lifelong stories, yes, but stories you no longer have to live by. You can put the book down, forever.

It’s as if something opens, a door you didn’t know was there. A space beyond the constraints you placed on yourself.

That space is freedom. The freedom to let go. The freedom to choose something else.

A common misconception about mindfulness is the idea of non-judgment being absolute. Mindfulness doesn’t mean avoiding all judgment—it means learning to judge wisely. We should evaluate whether our thoughts, emotions, and actions are serving us or holding us back.

Have you ever stopped to examine a pattern in your life? To ask yourself if this is how you want to spend the rest of your life?

This reflection can be transformative. It opens you to an entirely new gives perspective, a chance to step back. To see the bigger picture, and recognise the power you have to choose something different. You can choose to let it go.

Letting go isn’t about forcing thoughts away or trying to silence them. It’s about seeing them for what they really are: unhelpful habits that drain your energy and give you nothing in return.

So, what patterns are you tired of repeating? And what would your life look like if you decided to let them go today?

Many of our thoughts are habitual, following the same patterns. But instead of fighting against them, expect them. Acknowledging their inevitability allows you to shift from resistance to readiness. When you anticipate these thoughts, you take a proactive stance, which is far more empowering.

This mindset creates a crucial space between the trigger and your response. Within that space lies your ability to choose. You can decide to observe the thought, rather than react to it, or even redirect it toward a more constructive path.

By meeting it with awareness, you weaken its hold over time. This shift from reaction to intention allows you to reclaim control, gradually loosening the grip of these patterns and creating new more helpful thought patterns.

Why Negative Thoughts Feel True:
Negative thoughts trigger emotions like fear and anxiety, which activate the nervous system, cue the racing heart, tense muscles, shallow breathing. These physical sensations make the thought feel real, leading to the trap: “I feel it, so it must be true.” In CBT, this is called emotional reasoning.

Breaking the Cycle:

1. Ground yourself: Take slow breaths and observe the physical sensations thought without judgment.
2. Pause and question: What’s the evidence for this thought?
3. Remind yourself: Feelings are not facts.
