The Esthetic line is widely used to assess the side profile of patients in aesthetics.
What is the Esthetic Line?
This is an imaginary line drawn from tip of nose to the chin and is widely recognised as the aesthetic ‘ideal’.
Typically in aesthetics we want the tip of the nose and chin to be at the line with the lower lip 2 mm behind this line and the upper lip 4 mm behind the line.
It is important to note this is a standard aesthetic and varies in different areas of the world and ethnicities.
What do the photos show?
In the first photo on the left I have edited the chin to demonstrate how a chin set further back can change the profile significantly.
The second photo on the right demonstrates the The Esthetic Line with the nose and chin in balance.
Why does this matter?
Profile balancing can enhance features and create beautiful results. A common area to treat in aesthetics, which patients don’t often come asking for is their chin!
For patients with smaller chins and chins set back from the esthetic line, treatment of the chin with a small volume of filler can dramatically balance their facial profile.
Similarly we are beginning to see more and more overfilled lips which is affecting the esthetic line and contributing to creating unbalanced profiles as the chin and jawline can appear smaller in these cases.
