How to avoid neck pain you may have asked yourself?

Well, lucky you, we have brought you a few Dos ✅ & Don’ts 🚫:
✅ Do sit back against the chair when working. Leaning forward when sitting compresses the joints at the back of the neck leading to strain.

✅ Do take breaks from the computer frequently. Working at the computer for too long can result in fatigue related posture changes that strain the muscles and joints.

✅ Do gentle neck movements to prevent muscle fatigue. Gentle movement of the neck maintains blood flow to the muscles preventing muscle fatigue.

🚫 Don't sleep on your front. This position involves extreme rotation of the neck with compression of the joints of the neck. This is a common cause of neck injury.

🚫 Don't lean on your elbows when working. Leaning on the elbows transfers force through the arm to the shoulder and neck and over time this can lead to injury in these areas.

🚫 Don't lean into video calls. Leaning into conversation shows through body language that you are engaged with the speaker. As noted above, leaning forwards when sitting compresses the joints of the neck leading to strain. Leaning forward during video calls has become a common onset for neck pain seen in our patients since the pandemic.

If you have neck pain, it is important to get this checked as it can worsen and serious consequences.

🦵🏻💥 Patella tendonopathy

Patella tendonopathy is the most common cause of knee pain we see at the clinic. It is caused by inflammation at knee cap where the thigh muscles attach.

The four powerful quadriceps muscles at the front of the thigh produce the movement that straightens the knee. Kicking a football is a great example of the quadriceps muscles in action, straightening the knee.

These four thigh muscles all converge on one attachment, the top of the patella (knee cap). Then from the lower part of the patella, one single tendon extends down to the final attachment point below the knee at the tibia. The patella acts as a lever for the muscles as they cross the front of the knee enabling more efficient movement and greater power to be produced when straightening the knee.

Because of the high level of force passing through the patella, it is prone to inflammation at the attachment points of the quadriceps and the patella tendon. People who do impact exercise, such as runners, are especially susceptible to this type of injury.

One of the most common things that we find in patients who come to see us with this condition is extremely tight quadriceps muscles, so we treat this injury by stretching the quadriceps muscles and patella tendon. We also assess the overall biomechanics of the patient to highlight any other vulnerabilities in their movement pattern. We prescribe exercises for the patient to do at home to accelerate recovery and to prevent the injury from returning. Happily, this injury has a very high recovery rate.

🧬 Did you know?

The DNA in your cells is packaged into 46 chromosomes in the nucleus. As well as being a naturally helical molecule, DNA is supercoiled using enzymes so that it takes up less space.

Try holding a piece of string at one end, and twisting the other. As you add twist, the string creates coils of coils; and eventually, coils of coils of coils. Your DNA is arranged as a coil of coils of coils of coils of coils! This allows the 3 billion base pairs in each cell to fit into a space just 6 microns across.

If you stretched the DNA in one cell all the way out, it would be about 2m long and all the DNA in all your cells put together would be about twice the diameter of the Solar System
