With the winter months approaching we should all be doing everything we can to take care of our health. If you’re like me and live in a northern country, chances are you may be getting reduced sun exposure which means you’re more likely not getting enough vitamin D. Vitamin D is essential for regulating the immune system and those with suboptimal levels will be more susceptible to infection. This study here highlights the protective effects of optimal vitamin D levels in patients with Covid-19. So it’s particularly relevant at this time. They found that only 9.7% of patients over 40 years of age who were vitamin D sufficient succumbed to the infection compared to 20% who had a circulating level of 25(OH)D< 30 ng/ml. I’d recommend to get your levels tested to see where you are, and if they come back low supplementation is a great option over the winter months to get you back in the optimal range.
