Chilblains: How to spot them.
As the weather turns colder, some people develop chilblains — small, itchy, red or purple patches that appear on the toes, fingers, heels, or other extremities. They occur when the skin reacts to sudden changes in temperature, causing blood vessels to constrict and then leak fluid into the surrounding tissues.
Common symptoms include:
❄️ Red, blue, or purple discolouration of the skin
❄️ Itching, burning, or tingling sensations
❄️ Swelling or tenderness
❄️ Dry, cracked, or blistered skin
Chilblains can be uncomfortable but usually heal within a few weeks if the skin is kept warm and dry. Avoid direct heat and instead warm up gradually. Moisturising regularly and wearing thermal socks can also help prevent flare-ups.
If you experience recurring or severe chilblains, book an assessment at Chislehurst Podiatry for professional advice and care.
