On Wednesday 13th November, our lifestyle team organised a small initiative as part of World Kindness Day to encourage our lovely staff to show their appreciation for one another and their dedication to helping our residents to Live Well with Dementia through kindness!

Although our staff practice kindness every day and commit daily "acts of kindness" as part of their warm and devoted approach to care, this fun initiative allowed us to strengthen staff and resident rapport and got us thinking outside the box.

Staff picked from envelopes containing different random acts of kindness and a pink heart on which to write their appreciation for another staff member.

Their heartfelt messages inspired feelings of gratitude between staff and helped foster a culture of mutual acknowledgement of our team work.

This little challenge was met with enthusiasm as staff participated in...
- Putting on a resident's favourite music and having a boogie
- Arranging a phone call between a resident and their loved one
- Supporting a resident to make their own cup of tea (just how they like it!)
- Braiding and styling a resident's hair to give them a fresh hairstyle
- Taking a resident out for a walk in the garden
- Giving a resident a relaxing hand massage
- Painting a resident's nails in a fancy colour

And many more!

In the spirit of Harvest Festival and as part of this year’s celebrations, Heavers Court care home collected food donations from staff, residents and their relatives and friends to support:
Guiding Hands Organisation CIC
– a local foodbank carrying out inspiring work delivering free food parcels to those most in need in our area.

Our residents collaborated on decorating our donation box by painting, cutting out and arranging autumnal leaves.
The outpour of support was heart-warming, as our donation box quickly filled up with tins, cans, jars, pasta, rice, biscuits, crackers… you name it!

Two of our lovely residents then helped us to drop off the donations, which were welcomed with warmth and gratitude.

We are so pleased we were able to give back to the community in this small way with help from all the wonderful staff, residents and relatives at Heavers 😊

Our residents showcased their artistic and expressive talents in the Heavers Court Art Exhibition hosted on Saturday 28th September on site as part of the National Day of Arts in Care Homes.

We were joined by Croydon Council's Commissioning and Contract Manager Tristyn Eddings, and Eldon Housing’s Operations Manager Edison Galarza, as well as many relatives and staff, who enjoyed the wonderfully touching artwork that residents collaborated on together.

The themes for our art exhibition were:
- 'Nature' - including flowers, trees, special outdoor memories and still life
- 'Me and My Life' - including art reminiscent of the resident's homes, and handprint art that conveyed their identity within our Heavers Court community.

The shared effort and enthusiasm that residents poured into these pieces of art was visible in every art piece.
The residents enjoyed this when viewing the exhibition – feeling pride for themselves and each other and celebrating their talents!

The artwork featured a variety of mediums, including:
- Poster paints, acrylic paints, paint sticks
- Chalks, pencils, crayons
- Templates, cut-outs
- Cardstock, cardboard, paper, canvas

As well as different methods and art styles, such as:
- Technology art systems (RITA)
- Paper sculpture using cardstock
- Stencils
- Hand printing / finger painting
- Collage

The residents’ joint canvas art piece was so loved by visitors from the community, we were convinced to submit this piece as part of Croydon Council’s Challenge Perceptions, Celebrate Diversity art exhibition!
The resident’s artwork will be seen amongst other beautiful art as part of commemorations for Disability History Month.
Please see the poster attached for details of this Art Exhibition hosted in Croydon in November.

On Saturday 20th July the residents of Heavers Court enjoyed an active day full of competitive fun and Olympics-inspired entertainment as part of the Big Care UK Sports Day initiative.

We opened the event with a performance by Paul Betts, playing an eclectic mix of old-school tunes and catchy songs that had many residents singing along. Sprinkled in were familiar 50s/60s numbers, with residents guessing which popular films the songs were from. Some boogied in their seat, while others were up on the stage showing off their best Twist dance moves!

Following the joyous dancing came competition time!

Residents participated in a range of amusing and stimulating games to compete for medals (and bragging rights!). Encouraging cheers and game faces were on as everyone tried their hand at the range of sporty activities.
From balloon tap, to darts, to target throwing - everyone who wished to join participated enthusiastically, while others watched excitedly while their friends took their shots.

There were unexpected winners, laughter and silliness! Just take a look at some of our lovely winners giving us their best smiles 😊

Last week the residents of Heavers Court were treated to a performance full of “Britain’s old style “holiday camp” entertainment” that had them singing and clapping along from the very start!

The performance was full of musical numbers with choreography, costume changes and plenty of humour. It included “songs from the past, both evocative and tuneful”, which our residents recognised and loved – some were even up and dancing during the performance!

After all that dancing, singing, and belly laughter we all enjoyed a slice of moreish red velvet cake.

On 10th July Heavers Court hosted an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion event to celebrate the wonderful cultural diversity we have amongst our residents, relatives and staff team.

Residents were eager to get dancing and singing along to songs they recognised from their own country during our “Guess the Country” music quiz. Faces lit up upon hearing a familiar language or old song from the past, while others enjoyed a good laugh attempting to guess the country of songs they have never encountered before!

Our staff committed to sharing pieces of their culture by bringing in food for others to enjoy, and by surprising the residents by dressing in traditional gowns from their countries and showing off their best dance moves to music that is close to their hearts.

Our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion champion, the lovely nurse Sheillah Agenga, captivated the whole room when she gave a passionate and emotive speech about the importance of these values, educating ourselves and taking accountability.

Following the joyous, celebratory disco and hilarious quiz was a bustling, sociable lunch – residents got to try well known foods from Italy, France, Netherlands, Jamaica, Indonesia (and more!).

This event will be sure to become tradition at our richly multicultural home for many years to come 😊

Our residents at Heavers Court, in Croydon, enjoyed a lively day full of amusement and reminiscence as part of the D-Day 80th anniversary celebration on 6th June.

Many jumped up eagerly to dance with staff and sing along to retro songs performed by the fabulous Haywood Sisters, creating a bustling scene filled with plenty of laughter and clapping along! Residents also waved D-Day flags they created during an earlier activity session!

Spirits were high and the partying continued as residents sat down for a delicious, festive lunch – complete with stacks of cupcakes, joyful chatter, and a D-Day themed cake.

The exceptional team effort from our dedicated lifestyle and care staff team in organising, decorating, and facilitating the day’s events was recognised and much appreciated by residents and visiting relatives, who said to have enjoyed themselves tremendously!
