✨ Flow and Restore, Yang and Yin ✨
In Vinyasa Flow there is an element of Yin. There are restful poses and deeper stretches on the floor that balance out the Yang active sequence. I love a strong Vinyasa practice and teaching a strong class. However, there’s nothing quite like the total Yin element, relaxation and stillness achieved in restorative poses.
Yin Yoga is slightly different to Restoratove Yoga - the poses just aren’t as restful as you’re using your own body weight and gravity to create a deep stretch in Yin, which is meant to stress the target area slightly in order to soften the fascia and create space where there’s tension held in the muscles and joints. This practice is extremely beneficial and can release emotional tension and stress held in the body, from personal experience to generational patterns, somatically working with rewiring the nervous system by meeting the tension head on and breathing into it, softening the edges. This is in contrast to restorative where you’re using props to completely support your body so you can go into rest and digest mode, letting yourself be held so your nervous system can rest.
We can benefit from stillness just as much if not more so than movement. We can work on nervous system repatterining more consciously with Yin and more passively with restorative yoga.
This is why I love teaching flow to restore. The gentle flow to start supports mobility, strength, and energy levels whilst the restorative poses offer a chance to rest more deeply than in a Vinyasa practice or Yin.
You can find teaching flow to restore every Sunday at .london Highbury (lovely studio featured in this clip!), 4:15-5:15pm. There will be a mini sound journey in the Savasana with small instruments and chimes.
With all the charged astrological transits currently, this class is a chance to come home to yourself and recalibrate in the midst of massive global unrest and personal shifts. More on the astrology soon, keep an eye out for my full moon post.
See you on the mat. 🦋
Love,
