The eye lift transformation through upper blepharoplasty.

1. Prior to surgery

Though most patients will reach this stage of imperceptible surgery signs within three weeks, we find that subtle improvements continue for some weeks past this stage, as minor swelling subsides and the eyelid skin becomes even smoother.

Whatever our age, concerns or condition, a healthy and natural appearance of our eyes has again and again been shown to have a strongly positively effect on our quality of life.

We train lots of residents and junior eye surgeons every year and I always make it a personal point to try and explain what is so special about a career in oculoplastics, as it is not always self-evident.

I have never been able to put it as eloquently as the loving mother of this 5-year old patient of mine from several years back.

For this reason, I felt that this was a card worth sharing..

Happy outcome eyelid surgery has got to be all about the 𝘚𝘶𝘣𝘵𝘭𝘦 things.

Designing each eye’s sculpting independently, so as to deliver a good result with as close as possible symmetry (absolute symmetry is not really possible nor really desirable).

This upper blepharoplasty case highlights a few subtle design tweaks:

Surgical repair of non-severe drooping eyelid (ptosis) cases in young children is occasionally delayed, so that accurate outcomes can be achieved when the individuals are older.

There is always a great argument for not delaying this treatment any longer than early adulthood.

We divide the human face in imaginary ‘aesthetic units’ and these consist of parts of the face whose ageing affects one another.

Congenital eyelid droop (ptosis) is different to adult-onset ptosis where the eyelid muscle slips due to overuse.

In congenital eyelid droop, the levator muscle is poorly developed and instead replaced by rigid strands of fat and scar tissue in the place of normal flexible healthy muscle fibres.

Surgically achieving perfect symmetry along with good eyelid movement and the ability to close the eye safely is therefore much trickier to get right.

This patient of ours, a 24-year old professional athlete, visited us with a history of previous unsuccessful surgery.

I carried out revision left upper congenital ptosis repair by anterior levator resection.

At two months following surgery (bottom image), his eye surface is healthy and one can still appreciate the minimal intentional overcorrection and and fading incision line (both of which will correct within the next few months).
