Evidence of a surgeon’s performance is out there. Take Mr Hugh Apthorp at London Bridge Hospital. 63.2% of his hip replacement patients describe the results 6 months post-op as “Excellent”*. However, the average of ‘all other hip replacement surgeons’ achieving “Excellent” is 42.5%. That’s a whopping 20.7 percentage point difference.
In the 1960s, game changing artificial hip joints led to better and more consistent results. Whilst you’d think that 60 years later, this operation would be fairly standard practice, there’s still surprising variation in results achieved by surgeons - making the outcomes anything but standard.
Please rest assured, when describing hip replacement surgery results as “Excellent”, “Very good” and “Good” - all together - Hugh’s patients rate their results as 97.6%. The average of all other hip replacement surgeons is 93%.
But, the question remains, who wouldn’t want ‘Excellent’?
