Ever heard that age-old saying ‘you are what you eat’?

🍕Well, I’m here to tell you it’s…. only partially true. Every cell in our body uses the foods we eat to regenerate (so you can potentially be part Dorito).

💊 Gastrointestinal health plays an important role in determining overall nutritional status (pretty obvious when you think this is where we break down, digest and absorb all our food), so it stands to reason that any imbalances that occur during this process have implications that extend far beyond gut symptoms (poor digestion / assimilation of food = malabsorption induced ill health)

🥕 If our digestive function is suboptimal, then we could be eating the best, most expensive foods, taking the best food-grown supplements, eating only organic produce and it would essentially be doing diddly squat (sucks)!

So you are what you eat isn’t the entire truth, you are what you absorb (sorry Gillian mckeith)

Jumping on to say 🙋🏻‍♀️ and checking in on everyone on this beaut day ☀️

I took what felt like a week off for my birthday (2nd in lockdown) and it was lovely, i also spent last week visiting friends and family i hadn’t seen, as well as ripping apart my guest room turned office (something we thought would take a day to paint turned into wallpaper steaming hell - all fun and games).

It’s been a hot minute since I posted and although I want to be unapologetically authentic in creating this brand, I also carry huge guilt and fear for every day that I don't post anything (as everyone says, the number one rule to growing a business is to check in DAILY).

Eating for immunity isn’t easy!

Yes we all know we should eat more fruits and vegetables, up our fiber intake, drink more water, avoid gluten, dairy, simple sugars… but what does that leave us with?

A lot of my clients find it so hard to come up with healthy foods that are super YUMMY but still meet their nutrient needs.

The adult human gut houses roughly 100 trillion bacterial cells with more than 1000 different bacterial species (wowzer), including both beneficial bacteria that are protective and a few nasties.

There is crosstalk and cross-regulation between us (the humans) and the microbiota (bacteria) that reside in the gut, which creates *balance* keeping us free from any overgrowth of potentially bad bacteria.

We have a commensal relationship with these little bugs - the bacteria thrive in the rich environment of the gut while we benefit from multiple functions provided by these little guys.

This *balance* of the microbiome is extremely beneficial to us, however if there is a change in the microbial composition that causes a drastic *imbalance* between the beneficial and potentially bad bacteria, the gut becomes vulnerable to pathogens. This imbalance is termed “dysbiosis”.

In general, dysbiosis can be categorised into three different types: 1) Loss of beneficial organisms, 2) Excessive growth of potentially harmful organisms, and 3) Loss of overall diversity.

With dysbiosis comes potential dysbiosis-associated diseases, which can include:

💥Irritable Bowel Disease - (Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease)
💥Obesity
💥Diabetes Mellitus
💥Autism Spectrum Disorders
💥Cancer (especially colorectal cancer)

Good news is, we can all do a little to help our microbiome FLOURISH including;

🍜 Eating fermented foods (or taking probiotics)
🥦 Getting in AT LEAST 30g fiber daily
🍭Staying away from lots of sugars and sweeteners
💆🏻‍ Practising stress release
💊Avoiding antibiotics when unnecessary
🚴🏾Exercising regularly
💤Getting enough sleep

These symptoms are our bodies way of telling us something isn’t quite right. Most of the time we seek to treat the symptom, but understanding the root cause can help keep a myriad of these symptoms away for good, restoring us back to optimum health!

Diet, lifestyle and stress release techniques are often great places to start and something a registered NT will be more than happy to help you implement. Be sure to report any prolonged health concerns to your General Practitioner
