It's easier than you think for those closest to unintentionally sabotage your breastfeeding journey🤯

🌟Learning to breastfeed can be a vulnerable time for new mums and early days can often be challenging, requiring patience and perseverance whilst learning a new skill

🌟After birth you may feel too exhausted to think about breastfeeding, family friends may feel they are helping the situation by offering a bottle or maybe suggesting to have your baby for the night so you can rest, but this is when all the magic happens and time apart from your baby in the early stages may decrease your milk supply and lessen the chance of you establishing breastfeeding

🌟Dads often feel left out and redundant and are eager to help with bottle feeding, they can help in many other ways such as skin to skin, changing nappies, bath time, bed time and cuddles, these are all great ways to bond with baby

🌟Mothers are often given advice from people who truly believe that they are providing great advice with best intentions however advice can be dated or may even be cultural beliefs that can be detrimental to babies health and your breastfeeding journey such as giving water or herbal teas to settle the stomach

⭐️ You might hear things like "your baby is losing weight, you need to supplement with formula", it's best to seek advice from your midwife or healthcare professional and attend a breastfeeding drop-in for support and reassurance

⭐️ Breastfeeding Stimulates the brain to increase milk production, If a baby is also having formula your body Is unaware that your baby needs extra milk

🌟When baby latches to the breast an order is placed for milk, regular orders will increase Your milk supply and will help establish breastfeeding

⚽️Who thinks "It's Coming Home?"⚽️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

⚽️The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 is well and truly underway and more than ever drowning in a sea of controversy

⚽️have your spirits been dampened? If anything it's highlighted issues that would otherwise be brushed under the carpet by bringing them to the worlds attention🌎

⚽️Amongst all the scrutiny football is the ultimate focus and our favourite players from premier league clubs have now gone to play for their countries

⚽️Families are so diverse and are often from opposite corners of the world🌎is mum supporting one country and dad another?

⚽️who will you support?

⚽️Are you boycotting the football due to the controversy? Whatever your opinions, they are valued and respected

⚽️If your watching the games, take the opportunity to sit back, relax and bond with your family as this is a perfect time for chilling on the sofa and feeding your baby🥰

What these colours mean🌈👇

💛🧡Yellow/Orange milk is high in beta carotene, a plant pigment that gives orange and yellow fruit & vegetables like carrots, satsumas, oranges, egg yolk and salmon their vibrant colour

💛🧡Carotenoids in the maternal diet increase the amount of carotenoids in breastmilk particularly colostrum, which has the highest concentration of carotenoids, causing its deep Yellow/Orange colour

💗❤️Pink/Red milk can be from blood resulting from trauma to the ni**le and may occur from a poor latch or from pumping

💗❤️Have you have heard of the term rusty pipe syndrome? this is where there is an increase of blood flow to the breasts, some of the blood remains and expels through the milk, this milk is safe and harmless for your baby

💗❤️food dyes such as beetroot or carbonated sodas, fruit drinks or foods containing red artificial dye can also turn breastmilk pink

💚Green milk may occur If your diet is rich in leafy green vegetables, herbs or vitamin supplements or if anything is consumed with green food dyes

⬜️💙Grey/Blue milk may be more visible at the start of a feed or when beginning pumping as foremilk is thinner containing less fat and more electrolytes which are needed for hydration. Blue tinged milk may be more likely to occur during the summer or if the baby or mum is unwell due to an increase in water content or volume of milk, this happens when baby's feeding patterns change in response to illness or extra thirst

⬜️💙Blue milk may also occur due to the presence of casein which accounts for 40% of the protein content in your milk, this blue tinge can be more visible with a large volume of milk as the fat content is lower

🤍Cream is the most common colour milk indicating that the lactation process has reached its full maturity

🤍At approximately 2-4 weeks postpartum you will notice that the fat will separate from the watery part of expressed milk that has been stored, it will be thick and creamy and the watery part appears more translucent and runny

Read on to learn more👇

🌟Common colds, flu, sore throat, tummy bugs, fever and mastitis are all illnesses that are safe for mum to continue with breastfeeding

🌟You cannot transfer your illness to your baby through breast milk however, baby may have been exposed before you even began to feel unwell. You will make an antidote that passes specific antibodies through the milk to help protect baby from getting sick, or if they are unwell it will help to reduce the severity of symptoms🤩
HOW AMAZING IS THAT?

🌟There is currently no evidence to suggest that coronavirus can be passed through breast milk and the benefits of breastfeeding outweigh the risks relating to breastfeeding when you have coronavirus

🌟If medications are required always remind your GP so they can prescribe something that is safe with breastfeeding

🌟Most medications are safe to take while breastfeeding, for those that are not recommended there is usually a safe alternative

🌟Continue to wash your hands often🧴avoid sneezing/coughing on your baby🤧and try to limit face-to-face contact, it may be helpful to wear a mask whilst feeding😷

Myth busted👇

🌟Keeping your baby close helps to get breastfeeding off to the best possible start

🌟In the past, it has been common practice for babies to be separated from their mothers' and taken to the nursery to be looked after by midwives. This may have happened if the mother had a difficult delivery and needed some rest or time to recover, baby would be taken back for feeds or even fed in the nursery by bottle.

🌟Research has shown that babies that are kept close with their mother after birth are more likely to remember what they have done and continue to breastfeed when home.

🌟When a mother and her baby are in close contact it's easier to pick up on baby's feeding cue's so that they are fed responsively rather than at timed intervals. Babies kept beside their mothers' therefore end up feeding more often than if separated, this will help to encourage milk production and the mother is less likely to have other difficulties

🌟One concern is that if baby is with their mother constantly she will end up getting less sleep, in theory this sounds reasonable but research is saying there is no difference, partly due to the hustle and bustle of the postnatal ward, also because the mother is too wide awake and adrenaline fuelled to sleep properly after baby is born, mothers' naturally start to feel a bit nervous if their baby is taken away from them after birth. Here we are reminded of our cave girl instincts to stay close with our babies, if we had left baby when we lived in caves, predators would likely to have wandered off with them!
