So proud of myself and my fellow students for finishing nearly two years of coursework as yoga therapy trainees through .

We've learned so much about yoga therapy, biology, physiology, anatomy, neurobiology, psychology, health and wellbeing, yogic and Buddhist philosophy, and so much more! We've shared struggles, stress, tears (of joy and sadness), excitement, accomplishments, long weekends, and sleepiness through the years.

We had a closing ceremony over the weekend to celebrate the end of an era. Now the real work begins with essay writing and client case studies before we can officially call ourselves Yoga Therapists.

I'm so happy I made the decision to follow a new career path into the emerging healthcare profession of yoga therapy and I can't wait to see where this path leads.

Yoga nidra is often translated to "yogic sleep", but the intention is not to actually fall asleep. It's a guided meditation through the koshas (energetic sheaths/layers around the body) to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, inducing a state of deep relaxation on all levels - physical, mental, and emotional. In a way, the body sleeps, but the mind stays awake, free to explore through conscious awareness in a state between awake and sleeping. Though it can be used as an aid for a good night's sleep, other benefits include reducing stress and tension, and improving mind-body self awareness.

This practice is offered at Yoga Yurtopia on Thursdays as part of Slow vinyasa flow/Yoga nidra at 6pm, and is often included in our Sunday Unwind at 10am.

Restorative is a super gentle and supported yoga practice aiming to help you find a sense of deep relaxation. A great way to help reduce stress, anxiety, and tension, and bringing in balance. Poses are held for up to 20 minutes but, different from yin, the aim is not to find a deep stretch.

With the support of props (lots of props!), there may be gentle stretching, but the aim is to rest and let go. As you rest, the parasympathetic nervous system is stimulated, turning on the relaxation response helping to calm the nervous system, lower the heart rate, and release stress and tension (physical, mental, and emotional).

Set to calming music and candlelight, or occasionally with a sound bath, Yoga Yurtopia offers you the opportunity for you to relax and restore every Thursday night at 7:15pm.

Yin is a passive form of yoga that is a perfect complement to the dynamic Yang styles like Vinyasa, Ashtanga, and Rocket yoga. Poses are usually held for 3-5 minutes, but can be longer (20 minutes!). Not too be confused with Restorative where the aim is rest and relaxation, Yin is a deep stretch into the fascia/connective tissues that surround muscles and make up the ligaments in the joints - areas that aren't usually targeted much in other yoga practices.

There may be some discomfort, but we never want to move past that "edge" into pain, or worse - injury! Take the time to let you body ease or "melt" (as we like to say) into the pose.

Yin classes are offered at Yoga Yurtopia (New Barnet, London) on Thursday evenings at 830pm and Sunday mornings at 1130am - try us free! Register at www.yogayurtopia.com

Vinyasa flow yoga is probably the most common type of yoga you'll find at any yoga studio. Evolving from Hatha and Ashtanga yoga traditions, it is a dynamic practice linking the breath with movements between poses to keep the practice fluid.

This practice helps build strength and endurance, flexibility and fitness. The peaks and pauses during the practice are great for the heart - improving heart rate variability (an indicator of fitness and stress resilience) and balancing the autonomic nervous system (reducing and improving recovery from stress).

As with all yoga practices, it can be as gentle or as challenging as you like - it is Your practice after all!

Morning and evening vinyasa classes are offered in-studio and online at www.yogayurtopia.com - try us for free 🦄
