Today is World Alzheimer’s Day.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia in the UK affecting 1 in 14 people over the age of 65. There are now almost 50 million people living with dementia worldwide.

Dementia is used to describe when brain function is in decline affecting memory, thinking skills and other mental abilities.

Symptoms develop slowly over many years and eventually become much
more severe. This slow onset can make diagnosis difficult, especially since many of the symptoms are associated with getting older.

If you are worried about symptoms you may be experiencing then it is important that you speak with a GP. If you are worried about someone close to you, encourage them to make an appointment where you can be present.

At Sloane Square Medical our highly experienced GPs are available to talk through your concerns and recommend the best course of action. To make an appointment visit

What is the male menopause?

During mid-life some men can experience symptoms such as anxiety, depression, loss of s*x drive, difficulty sleeping, poor concentration and erectile disfunction.

These symptoms, like menopause, can have a huge impact on a person’s well-being and quality of life.

However, the term ‘male menopause’ is misleading. The biggest misconception is that, like the decline in hormones during menopause, ‘male menopause’ is attributed to a drop in testosterone in men, but this is not the case in most instances.

In actual fact the ‘male menopause’, also known as andropause, in many cases is linked to poor lifestyle such as lack of sleep, poor diet, lack of exercise and drinking and smoking and psychological issues such as stress, depression and anxiety.

In rare cases late-onset hypogonadism can be the cause of these symptoms. Hypogonadism is when the te**es produce little to no testosterone. This is a very rare condition which an experienced GP will test for should there be any concerns.

September is Urology Awareness Month.

Urological issues can occur in both men and women of any age. In most cases, these can be treated easily with medical guidance and help.

During mid-life, men can start experiencing symptoms of hesitancy and poor flow of urine. Sleep can be disturbed by having to get up in the night to pass urine. Men are more likely to delay going for help. There are simple medications that are readily available which can improve the overall quality of life once an assessment has excluded any serious cause.

Early treatment prevents chronic symptoms such as an overactive bladder developing due to enlargement of the prostate interfering with urinary flow.

During perimenopause and menopause, women experience a drastic change in hormones which can lead to a greater likelihood of urinary tract infections and urinary incontinence. Drinking plenty of water and regular exercise can help improve urinary health and prevent the development of more serious conditions.
Also, local oestrogen therapy has been shown to improve urinary symptoms.

Both men and women can both suffer from kidney stones which can usually present from middle age and can cause significant pain.

Preventative care is the most effective way of lowering the chances of severe illness. Regular and appropriate health screenings play a large role in preventive care.

We recommend having annual health reviews from the age of 40 and being screened for urinary diseases as well as being screened for cardiovascular diseases including cholesterol levels, diabetes, high blood pressure and cancer.
If you would like to discuss your symptoms with one of our highly experienced GPs book an appointment online via our website at www.sloanesquaremedical.org/appointments or call the practice directly on 020 7730 8835.

This week is about raising awareness of high blood pressure and the importance of being screened for hypertension.

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, seldom has any noticeable symptoms. Many people have high blood pressure and never know it. In the UK, as people get older, it is estimated that around a third of adults have high blood pressure. This puts them at a higher risk of heart attack, stroke and other life-threatening illnesses.

The only way to know if you are suffering with hypertension is to have your blood pressure checked.

It is recommended that from the age of 40 blood pressure is checked every 5 years.
People who smoke, drink alcohol regularly, are overweight, eat too much salt, do not eat enough fruit & veg, do not get enough exercise and do not get enough sleep can become at risk of developing high blood pressure.

If you are concerned about your blood pressure or are 40 years or older and haven’t had your blood pressure taken for a while, then book an appointment today to see one of our highly experienced GPs by calling 020 7730 8835 or visiting our website at www.sloanesquaremedical.org/appointments

07/09/2022

The UK was declared Polio free by the WHO in 2003. This year, vaccine-like type-2 poliovirus (PV2) isolates have been detected in the sewage from North London between February and May.

Since 2004, in the UK, the polio vaccine has no longer been a ‘live’ vaccine. We use what is known as a ‘killed vaccine’, this means it cannot be passed on from person to person and cannot appear as a live vaccine in the sewage systems.

There are countries however that still administer a live vaccine orally. It is likely that a person who has received the live vaccine abroad and has travel to the UK where they are shedding the virus. This is what has been detected in the sewage.

It is normal for this to occur a few times a year and usually the virus disappears from the sewage without further spread.

However, there is always a risk that it may not disappear and therefore spreads within the population. From sewage samples we are able to see that this has started to happen.

Because polio is a serious illness, the JCVI has recommended all children aged between 1 & 9 years old should have an extra dose of the Polio vaccine on top of their routine schedules. This will hopefully stop the spread of the virus and the risk of complication such as paralysis.

There are 3 different Polio vaccines recommended depending on age. If you have children between the ages of 1 and 9 years, it is important you speak with your GP about a booster vaccine.

This week is Migraine Awareness Week.

Migraines are a severe chronic condition causing mild to extreme headaches. Symptoms can include sensitivity to lights, sounds and smells, difficulties with sight, fatigue and nausea or sickness.

Migraines and headaches come in many different forms. An individual can suffer with both at different times in their lives.

Life stages can also influence migraines, especially in women who experience shifts in hormone balance particularly through the menstrual cycle and menopause.

People who suffer with migraines or severe headaches often suffer in silence and can be helped by medicines and therapies to help alleviate their pain and discomfort.

What’s your experience of migraines and severe headaches?

If you are experiencing acute headaches, it is important you get the correct diagnosis for your pain to receive the most effective treatment.

At Sloane Square Medical our highly experienced GPs are on hand to talk with you about any concerns or symptoms you may be experiencing.

Preventative care is an essential tool in maintaining good health. Identifying the early risk of disease and illness can have an enormous impact on diagnosis and the effectiveness of treatment.

But when is the best time to begin annual health screening?

Health screening can happen at any time during a person’s life however, as a person enters their mid-life it is important to maintain regular reviews of your overall health, even if there are no obvious symptoms or immediate concerns to your wellbeing.

During a comprehensive health screening, we take a full family medical history as well as understand your diet and lifestyle.

We check key systems including cardiovascular, respiratory, central nervous, gastrointestinal and muscular. We check the health of your heart through an ECG. Take a full blood screening to test blood count, liver function, thyroid, blood glucose and cholesterol. Take urinalysis
to test for abnormalities, faecal occult blood screen for bowel cancer as well as a breast examination, pelvic ultrasound and smear test for women and prostate and testicular examination for men.

Through this comprehensive screening, we can identify any future risk to your health and advise on medication, treatment or further testing to reduce any risk.

We are now offering Hereditary Health Screening which combines a comprehensive medical screening with genetic cancer risk testing to understand your personal cancer risk as well as provide an extensive assessment of your overall health and wellbeing.

If you would like to learn more about the health screening packages we offer or book a health screening, visit www.sloanesquaremedical.org/health-screenings or call the practice directly on 020 7730 8835.

Genetic testing plays a key role in our Hereditary Health Screening program, but what is genetic testing?

Genetic testing (sometimes referred to as DNA testing) is a simple buccal swab or blood test that allows experts to assess your DNA and identify if you are at risk of developing the most common cancers in the future. The testing includes BRCA1, BRCA2, Color 30 Gene Panel, 77 Cardiac Genes and Extended Gene Panel.

At Sloane Square Medical we are passionate about ensuring patients receive outstanding care using doctors who are specialists and evidence-based diagnostics.

Genetic screening is at the forefront of medical care for patients with cancer and their relatives. Educating patients on the most appropriate and personalised genetic screening is key to providing the best care and saving lives by providing the right preventative care pathway.

Our Oncogenetics Consultant Dr George is one of only two consultants qualified to specialise in both oncology and genetics and identifying the hereditary risk of developing cancer. This is the highest standard of diagnostics available for genetic cancer identification in the UK.

Healthy eating plays an essential role in our overall well-being. Without the right nutrients and variation in diet, our bodies will cease to thrive.

Gut health is becoming an increased area of interest within the medical community. Although we are still in the early stages of our understanding, recent studies suggest a clear link between diet, gut health and overall well-being including cholesterol, immune system and heart disease.

We know that our guts contain bacteria, trillions of bacteria. The key is to ensure that the majority of these bacteria are what are known as ‘good’ bacteria.

The digestive system is incredibly complex. There is not a one-size-fits-all approach to getting a perfect balance however, a diet rich in certain food can ensure your gut, and you, remain as healthy as possible.

There is increasing interest in what you digest not just what you eat. Your immune system involves your lymphatic system which follows the blood vessels around the whole body.

There is a discussion that 70% of the immune system comes from the gut and gut bacteria.

Increasing the fibre in your diet helps to support gut bacteria.

If you would like help improving your gut health or have concerns about how your diet may be affecting your overall well-being, then we recommend you speak with one of our highly experienced GPs and dieticians. Visit www.sloanesquaremedical.org/appointments or call the practice directly on 020 7730 8835 to make your appointment today.
