Community services can play a crucial role in promoting mental health awareness, reducing stigma/discrimination and supporting people to better their quality of life. Having mental health issues can impact many areas of our lives e.g. relationships, work and physical health. Without the right support it can prevent you from living the life you want.

Many communities and local services are faced with the issue of having low resources and being underfunded because mental health isn’t prioritised in their communities and by their governments. Without funding and resources, these mental health services are not able to provide the care and service the community needs.

It is important that mental health services are prioritised and are given funding and resources so that they can continue to promote mental health awareness and support the members of the community to thrive and achieve their best.

Change is inevitable. Sometimes it can be positive – business growth or a pay raise. At other times it can be painful – losing your job or a personal loss. Often the hardest changes to understand and adjust to are the ones that are unexpected and out of our control.

Practicing different ways of thinking and being in the world can boost your ability to deal with change and help you create a life that is adaptive to new places and unexpected events. Here are some tips to help deal with changes in life:
1. Acknowledge that things are changing
2. Realise that even good change can cause stress
3. Keep up your regular schedule as much as possible
4. Try to eat as healthily as possibly
5. Exercise
6. Write down the positives that come from this change
7. Seek support
8. Be proactive

Prioritising your health in life’s transitions means not being afraid to ask for help when you need it. Talk to family and friends who are experiencing similar changes, or consider finding a support group in your community.

Many people are hesitant to get help for health issues. The most common reasons for why people don’t seek help for health issues are:
1. Fear and shame - People acknowledge the negative stigma and discrimination surrounding health issues (especially mental health) and they are scared of being labelled and how this can affect their life.
2. Lack of insight - Some people are not aware that what they are experiencing is poor health and that they need help. Some don’t see that there is anything wrong so they don’t seek help.
3. Limited awareness - Lack is awareness causes people to not be fully aware of how bad their health issues are.
4. Feelings of inadequacy - Some people feel that they are weak or a failure if they ask for help with heath issues. So they prefer to deal with it on their own.
5. Distrust - For some it is difficult to speak to a doctor or heath professional about personal things such as health.
6. Hopelessness - Some people feel that nothing and no one can help them and they find it difficult to see a way that they can get better.
7. Unavailability - In some areas resources are limited so a person may be willing to seek professional help but there are no support systems available in their area.

Talking about these issues, they can then be encouraged to seek care to relieve their distress. Ongoing efforts to reduce stigma and discrimination are essential to send the clear message that it’s ok to talk openly about health issues and to ask for help.

Social health refers to our ability to interact and form meaningful relationships with others. It also relates to how comfortably we can adapt in social situations. Social relationships have an impact on our mental health, physical health and mortality risk.

Good social health looks like:
* Adapting to social situations
* Balancing your social and personal time
* The ability to develop and maintain friendships
* Creating boundaries in relationships
* Having a supportive network of family and friends

Poor social health can trigger health issues :
* Heart disease
* High blood pressure
* Suppressed immune system
* Chronic health conditions
* Mental health issues like anxiety

For some, being in social situations can be overwhelming and stressful. They feel anxious and pressured. So they refrain from forming social relationships and from being in social situations. Social health is important so if you feel that you struggle with poor social health seek help and support.

Mental health is not mental illness. The difference between mental health and mental illness isn’t clear to many people. It’s easier to understand the difference when you treat them as separate entities. Mental health is about mental wellness - we all have mental health.

Mental illness is when people get diagnosed with a mental disorder and it could start when we ignore our mental health and well-being, and we don't seek help or support or voice our inability to cope with daily living.

Mental health, defined by the World Health Organization, is "a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community"

In the course of a lifetime, not all people will experience a mental illness, but everyone will struggle or have a challenge with their mental well-being (i.e., their mental health) just like we all have challenges with our physical well-being from time to time.

Regular activity is an investment in your mind, body, and soul. When it becomes habit, it can foster your sense of self-worth and make you feel strong and powerful. You’ll feel better about your appearance and, by meeting small exercise goals, you’ll feel a sense of achievement.

People tend to exercise regularly because it gives them an enormous sense of well-being. They feel more energetic throughout the day, sleep better at night, and feel more relaxed and positive about themselves and their lives. And it’s also a powerful medicine for many common mental health challenges.
Regular exercise can have a profoundly positive impact on depression and anxiety. It also relieves stress, improves memory, helps you sleep better, and boosts your overall mood. And you don’t have to be a fitness fanatic to reap the benefits.

The rise of social media has meant that people are more connected. But our reliance on social media can have negative effects on our mental health. While using social media platforms does have its benefits, using them too frequently can make you feel increasingly unhappy and isolated. The constant exposure to perfectly filtered photos can negatively impact a person’s self esteem and scrolling through social media before bed can contribute towards poor quality of sleep.

Becoming more conscious of the amount of time you spend scrolling social media can help you focus more on yourself and boost your self-confidence. You don’t need to quit social media for good, try allocating social media free time into everyday. This small habit can have a positive impact on your mental health.
