In the SEND Parenting Podcast: "Supporting Stressed Teens" Dr. Naomi Fisher and Eliza Fricker explore how external pressure can worsen stress and hinder children’s ability to manage daily expectations and responsibilities. As they point out, "You can’t reduce someone’s anxiety by adding more pressure and anxiety."

For children who are struggling, particularly those finding it difficult to attend school, it's essential to offer support that helps them create a space where they can breathe, self-regulate, and reduce stress. This process is unique to each individual.

At London Autism Service, we believe that all children and teenagers can learn to understand their emotions and develop the tools they need to cope effectively with daily challenges.

Understanding demand avoidance is crucial for autism support, as it allows caregivers, educators, and therapists to adopt strategies that reduce stress and encourage cooperation.
Our team of clinical professionals here at London Autism Service provide systemic support by working closely with families, schools, and other caregivers to develop tailored strategies that reduce anxiety and increase participation.
Support often involves creating a more flexible, supportive environment, offering choices, and using positive reinforcement to help the child feel more in control and less anxious.
Through personalised interventions and ongoing communication, we empower individuals with Autism Spectrum Condition to develop coping strategies that help manage demand avoidance, while fostering a sense of accomplishment and engagement.

Today marks the beginning of Autism Acceptance Month and every day, let's celebrate the unique perspectives, talents, and strengths of those on the autism spectrum.

Autism is not something that needs to be "fixed"—it's a different way of experiencing the world, and that difference deserves respect, understanding, and care. Everyone on the spectrum is different, with their own personality and abilities, and that's what makes them incredible.

Here’s to creating a world where neurodiversity is celebrated, where every person is given the opportunity to shine, and where acceptance is the standard — not the exception.

Here at London Autism Service we work together. We are a team of multidisciplinary professionals who support children, adolescents and adults in a future where everyone, regardless of how they think, feel, or interact, can be fully seen, heard, and valued.

Here are 5 strategies to help nurture your authentic self and embrace neurodiversity:

1. Practice Self-Awareness 🧠 – Take time to understand how you experience the world, your sensory sensitivities, and your strengths. Self-awareness is key to navigating life with confidence.
2. Set Sensory and Emotional Boundaries ✋ – Recognise what triggers your sensory overload and emotional stress, and create boundaries to protect your well-being. It's okay to prioritise your needs.
3. Embrace Your Unique Traits 🌟 – Your differences are strengths! Whether it's your focus, attention to detail, or different way of thinking, embrace these qualities as part of what makes you, you.
4. Engage in Self-Discovery 🔍 – Explore activities and environments that feel authentic to you. Whether through special interests, hobbies, or creative outlets, self-discovery can be a powerful way to connect with your true self.
5. Surround Yourself with Understanding People 🌸 – Find those who respect your neurodiversity, offer support, and accept you for who you are. A positive, understanding community makes all the difference.

Remember, self-development is a journey unique to each person. Embrace your neurodiversity and continue to grow at your own pace.

At the London Autism Service we provide a clear diagnosis pathway, assessments and tailored post-diagnostic support.

Thank you for your support in 2024.

As an independent not for profit local business we thank you for trusting us to treat your family.

Please be aware that The Family Treatment Service, The Eating Disorder Service and the London Autism Service are closed over the holiday period from 19th December until we open again on 3rd January.

If in crisis you may need to consider attendance at your local A&E department where services provide 24 hour mental health assessment, or alternatively contact your GP for less urgent matters.

We hope you have a happy and peaceful festive season and look forward to seeing you again in 2025.

How can you manage your stress levels during the Christmas period?

Make a diary plan of what you think you can cope with doing and stick to it. If this is one social event a week, keep to that.

Practise saying ‘no’ to events that you know will drain your capacity to cope.
Plan activities that replenish your social energy throughout the festive season. This could look like watching a movie, practising yoga, or taking a bath. Self care will be vital to make sure you don’t burn out.

Think about your environment and how your senses respond. For example being around huge groups of people and loud music might feel exhausting whereas a one-on-one in a quiet cafe with a much-loved person, could be a fulfilling and enjoyable experience.

It is common for children with Autism to have eating difficulties which can continue into adulthood. Research indicates that there can be clear overlapping features in both ASC and Anorexia Nervosa such as; rigid thinking, challenges in social interaction, sensory sensitivities and restricted, repetitive behaviours that help them to stay calm.
The comorbidity (both conditions presenting at the same time) requires a different approach to treatment from clinicians who have experience and understanding and compassion.

Deciding to undertake an autism assessment and choosing the right provider can feel like a daunting task. NHS waiting lists can be long and there is a lot of misinformation about private providers.

If you do decide to go down the private route, here is what to look out for:
An initial appointment. Autism assessments can be expensive. An initial appointment can help you determine if the clinic is right and most importantly if the assessment is appropriate for you or your child.
A multidisciplinary team approach. This is considered to be the gold standard. It means that assessments are produced collaboratively with Clinical Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Clinical Mental Health Nurses and SEN teachers, providing bespoke recommendations and robust reports.
Quality questionnaires. Ensure that the assessment uses National Autistic Society questionnaires. This guarantees that the assessments are of the highest quality.
School collaboration. Autism assessments that include collaboration and discussion with a child's teacher in addition to the standard practice school questionnaires, can gather further necessary details.

If you would like further information about autism assessments or to book an initial consultation, get in touch with us via the link in our bio.

Happy Autism Acceptance week from The London Autism Service!

As a proud member of the National Autism Society, we want to take this opportunity to highlight some of the barriers autistic people face and the work that needs to be done to create a better society that works for autistic people.

Recent statistics show that currently:

Only 26% of autistic pupils are happy at school
Only 29% of autistic people are in any form of employment
70% of autistic people experience mental health problems.

(Statistics provided by the National Autism Society)

Through autism assessments, support groups and therapy sessions we provide advice and support to families, children and adults impacted by autism to create better working environments for all. Head to our website for more information https://londonautismservice.com/
