I was asked to contribute to an article in Grazia about the benefits of fasting and I thought, as it’s a hot topic right now, I’d share some of my knowledge with you…

Intermittent fasting is certainly not for everyone, but whether for general health and wellbeing, or other reasons, it can bring many benefits.

Fasting promotes the body’s natural detoxification process. By avoiding foods and drink for extended periods, the body starts to eliminate toxins and recycle damaged cells, which can reduce the build-up of impurities.

Fasting lowers inflammatory markers in the body and stabilises blood sugar levels, and this period of rest allows the digestive system to focus on repair, so that the microbiome (the good bacteria) can flourish, which in turn reduces inflammation throughout the body.

And then there’s insulin sensitivity improvement – something I talk a lot about. Intermittent fasting can lead to a reduction in insulin resistance, which may help to improve blood sugar control and protect against type 2 diabetes, which is far more prevalent in today’s society than people realise. It is also THE reason PCOS develops - and the key to reversing and managing the condition.

I'm talking about insulin resistance. Something which affects a huge proportion of the population, and yet, they don't know about it.

Insulin resistance (IR) happens when we overeat starch and sugars in any form. This causes our bodies (pancreas) to pump out loads of insulin to keep blood sugar normal. It does this, until it can't. Then what happens is you get type 2 diabetes and a whole host of other problems: increased belly fat, muscle loss, inflammation, hormonal imbalances, and even brain damage.

It can also be caused by prolonged stress, reduced activity levels and genetics.

The good news is IR - the biggest cause of ageing - can be reversed by reducing starch and sugar intake, and perhaps even removing it completely from your diet for a length of time.

But, the key is prevention. Half of Americans over 60 have insulin resistance, even children as young as three. Surely it's time to get a hold on our sugar intake once and for all. It really is the answer to a long and healthy life.

It's always a pleasure to receive a testimonial like this from a patient, especially when you are simply doing the job that you love to do.

For me, it's a personalised approach to optimising hormone health for women and men throughout life, and, in doing so, preventing long-term chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, strokes and cancers.

Every extra 1cm around the waist 'raises risk of infertility by 3%' reports The Times.

The underlying cause is insulin resistance, not the other way around. Insulin resistance decreases the body's ability to cope with sugars and carbs. This is the direct cause of lack of ovulation and decreased fertility. Reversing insulin resistance helps restore ovulation and fertility.
