Air travel can be a stressful experience, adding to the stress of flying, is the possibility of experiencing ear pain during takeoff or landing, making an already uncomfortable situation worse.
A lot of air passengers can experience Barotitis Media or "Aeroplane Ear" when ascending or descending, this is due to the pressure changing with altitude. While long-term damage is unlikely from this condition, it can be painful, so it's important to practice caution. Our ears can react sensitively to variations in air pressure due to flying.
Following these helpful tips below may help relieve some pressure & discomfort.
Wearing earplugs during take-off and landing can help reduce this effect. Adjusting air pressures inside your auditory canal could prevent discomfort.
If you yawn, chew, or swallow while flying that might help open the Eustachian tubes and equalize the pressure.
It is recommended to be cautious flying when suffering from an infection of any kind, including infections of the ears or sinuses. Additionally, be sure to consult your medical professional if you are taking flights following recent surgeries involving your ears, nose, or throat.
Practice the Valsalva manoeuvre like this: pinch your nose firmly and close your mouth. Take a deep breath in through your mouth then gently blow out through pursed lips to stabilize ear pressure during take-offs and landings. This manoeuvre should be first practised with your DR as there are contraindications.
