I love befriending because...

‘There were nerves on both sides initially, and I thought to myself, what am I going to have in common with a 97-year-old? We ended up chatting about everything from the royal family to the quality of M&S underwear.'

Befriender Michelle had been meeting with Edith, aged 97, for just a few short months before she sadly passed away in October this year. In that time, the two developed a truly special companionship, with each bringing ‘a real sense of fun’ to the other’s life, says Michelle. ‘I’d never have had the chance to meet someone like Edith. You gain a huge amount from befriending and it’s not always in ways you'd expect.'

Edith was intelligent, very proud of her family, loved clothes and fashion and was a keen knitter. 'She was inspirational, and I told her that,' Michelle adds.

‘Mum said she didn’t think she would be lucky to get to know someone as nice as Michelle — that says a lot!' Edith's daughter told us.

I'm a befriender because...

'I enjoy befriending. It’s had a positive effect on my life, and it's really interesting hearing people's stories,' says John, who's been meeting with Angela, aged 83, every week for the past six months.

Psychotherapist-in-training John has found befriending just as rewarding as befriendee Angela, who describes John as 'very bright'. 'We chat about all kinds of things,' Angela told us. The pair have become very fond of each other, and have bonded over their shared love of cats.

My befriender is brilliant because…

‘John is the grandson I never had. We sit and natter until we’re blue in the face,’ says Angela, who’s been meeting with her befriender John, aged 37, since she retired in January due to ill health.

Now aged 83, living alone and with limited mobility, she’s found it really difficult losing the daily engagement and sense of purpose that her career provided. ‘I’m very grateful for John,’ she told us.

Their weekly chats have become a real tonic for Angela, helping her feel she still has a place in the community.

Today marks the start of Befriending Networks' Befriending Week 2025, a celebration recognising the impact of befriending across the UK.

Wimbledon Guild’s befriending service has been running for over 100 years and continues to play a vital role in reducing loneliness and building connections across our community.

This year’s theme is Collaboration and Partnership, and by building partnerships between organisations, volunteers and the people we support, we can help make sure that no one in Merton has to face life’s challenges alone.

Throughout the week, we’ll be sharing inspiring stories from people who have benefitted from our befriending service.

As part of our activities to celebrate Black History Month, our kitchen team has been cooking up recipes suggested by staff and volunteers. This week’s dish was Ugandan matoke, recommended by our fantastic café volunteer Moses, who said it reminds him of his childhood.

Café visitors have also enjoyed Caribbean curried chicken and Nigerian jollof rice. Earlier this month, we also welcomed Sarah Gould from Merton Council who paid homage to Merton’s African Caribbean communities with a talk reflecting on the faces and places linked to their history in the borough.

Our celebrations this month are part of the work we do throughout the year to make sure that Wimbledon Guild is a welcoming place for everyone in our community.
