Susan qualified in Acupuncture at the University of Westminster where she obtained a BSc (Hons) in Traditional Chinese Medicine: Acupuncture. In-patients she treated at the hospital included stroke patients and chronic back pain. In the general walk-in clinic Sue treated mostly patients with musculoskeletal problems (e.g. neck and back pain and tennis elbow), gynaecological problems (menopausal and period problems) and Bells Palsy. SPOILER: Not All “Acupuncturists” Are Trained the Same.
The term *“acupuncturist”* is widely used, but it doesn’t always tell you what kind of training a practitioner has completed, or what they are capeable of helping you with.

That’s why one of ARA’s core aims is to clarify titles and training levels across the acupuncture profession.

For example, a practitioner might be:
🔹 A fully trained "Traditional Acupuncturist" or "5-Element Acupuncturist" with core training in Chinese medicine theory and the ability to address health issues as well as musculoskeletal issues.
🔹An "Auricular Acupuncturist" with training similar to the above, but who may have some restrictions in what they can address, e.g. pain management or addiction.
🔹 A **health therapist** offering acupuncture as an adjunctive tool from a short course such as tendon healing, or pain management.
🔹 A **medical professional** (e.g. physiotherapist or GP) trained in medical acupuncture for a specific scope.
🔹 A Sports therapist or Osteopath etc. who offers musculoskeletal acupuncture, or even in some cases even full health acupuncture.

All of these individuals may refer to themselves as “acupuncturists”, but their background, approach, and depth of training can be very different, and even though many of these descriptions are accurate, some may divert from them, so always check with them before booking, and don't worry about telling them over the phone what your issue is, this will need to know this in order to ascertain if you have the right acupuncturist.

ARA believes the public deserves clarity.
Practitioners should clearly state:
✔️ Their level of training
✔️ Their area of expertise
✔️ That they can help you, rather than stating they can cure you

Unifying the profession under a shared set of transparent standards protects clients and enhances trust, without diminishing the value of anyone’s contribution.

Our Story

Susan qualified in Acupuncture in 2000 at the University of Westminster where she obtained a BSc (Hons) in Traditional Chinese Medicine: Acupuncture. Soon after she took a career break to bring up her daughter. In November 2013 Sue went on a study trip to China to the University of Shanghai where she practised acupuncture in a district hospital alongside Dr Huang. In-patients she treated at the hospital included stroke patients and chronic back pain. In the general walk-in clinic Sue treated mostly patients with musculoskeletal problems (e.g. neck, shoulder, knee, tennis elbow and back pain), gynaecological problems (menopausal and period problems) and Bells Palsy.

She has a special interest in Women’s health, including infertility and pregnancy. She treats all the way through pregnancy and can prepare a women’s body for labour from about 35 weeks. She also offers support through IVF including a pre- and post embryo transfer treatment. She is now offering her services in the relaxing surroundings of her own home in Walthamstow.
