Before you buy the latest trending product for acne, it’s worth remembering that there isn’t one single treatment that works for everyone.

Acne develops for several reasons, including increased oil production, blocked pores and inflammation. Different people experience different patterns of acne, from comedones and congestion to red inflamed bumps or hormonal breakouts along the jawline.

Even the right products may not work if we don’t consider the bigger picture. Lifestyle factors, hormones and the health of the skin barrier can all influence how the skin responds.

My approach is to assess your skin barrier health first and add in support as needed. From there, we introduce one active at a time and monitor how the skin responds. This allows the routine to be adjusted gradually and safely as your skin improves.

Acne management is rarely about a single product. It’s about building a personalised plan that takes into account your skin type, the severity of the acne and the factors contributing to it.

Healthy skin is rarely about one miracle product.

It’s built through small, consistent habits that support your skin barrier, reduce unnecessary irritation and protect your skin over time.

These are some of the simple things I do every day for my own skin. No trends, no shortcuts, just consistent care and paying attention to what my skin actually needs.

Consistency tends to deliver far more meaningful results than constantly changing routines or chasing the latest product.

If you’re considering home microneedling, it’s important to understand how it differs from treatments performed in the clinic.

Professional microneedling devices are designed to reach controlled depths within the skin, typically between around 0.5 and 1.5 mm depending on the treatment area, and sometimes deeper for specific scar protocols.

These treatments are carried out under sterile conditions and are carefully tailored to the individual.

Home devices are much shorter, usually around 0.2 to 0.3 mm. While they may sound similar, they do not work in the same way as medical-grade devices used in clinics.

More importantly, without proper technique, sterile handling and clinical assessment, home microneedling can increase the risk of irritation, infection, scarring or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, particularly in darker skin tones.

For these reasons, I generally don’t recommend microneedling at home. Treatments should always be carried out safely and appropriately for your skin.

If you’re confused about how to layer your skincare, it’s often simpler than you might think.

For most people, one key active in the morning and one in the evening is usually more than enough. It’s also how I structure my own routine.

In the morning, start with a gentle cleanser. For many people this works best, although if your skin is sensitive or reactive, simply rinsing with water can sometimes be enough. Pat the skin dry rather than rubbing.

Next apply your main active, commonly an antioxidant such as vitamin C, which helps support the skin against UV exposure and environmental stress. Follow with a moisturiser if needed, and always finish with SPF 50.

If your skin feels irritated, reactive or your barrier is compromised, the priority should shift. In those situations it’s often better to pause actives and focus on hydration and barrier repair. Ingredients such as ceramides, cholesterol, hyaluronic acid and glycerin can help support the skin while it recovers.

Your skin barrier plays a crucial role in protecting your skin and maintaining healthy function.

When the barrier becomes compromised, the skin can feel dry, irritated, reactive or prone to breakouts. Many people try to treat the symptoms without realising that barrier repair often needs to come first.

Supporting the skin barrier through gentle skincare, hydration and reducing unnecessary irritation can make a significant difference to overall skin health.

If you’ve been told that tanning beds can help acne, it’s important to understand what’s actually happening to your skin.

You might notice that spots look a little drier or less red after UV exposure, but this effect is temporary.

Acne develops due to increased oil production, blocked pores and inflammation within the skin. UV exposure does not address any of these underlying processes.

Tanning beds can also damage the skin barrier, increase inflammation and sometimes lead to rebound oiliness.

If you are using prescription treatments such as topical retinoids or certain medications, UV exposure can further increase the risk of irritation and sensitivity.

There is also the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, where dark marks remain on the skin even after breakouts have settled.

Most importantly, tanning beds significantly increase the risk of skin cancer. While the skin may appear temporarily improved, the long-term risks are real.

Sometimes patients are surprised if I recommend a review before prescribing skincare, even if they’ve used the product before.

In aesthetics and dermatology, it’s very common for care to become fragmented. Someone might have treatments in one clinic, prescription skincare from another, and see a dermatologist elsewhere.

When that happens, no one clinician has the full picture.

Treatments can affect the skin barrier, inflammation levels and pigmentation risk. Procedures, active ingredients and prescription treatments can all interact with each other.

If I prescribe something, I need to be confident it is safe and appropriate for your skin at that specific point in time, even if you have used it previously, particularly if there has been a long gap since it was last issued.

Sometimes that means recommending a review first, and occasionally it means saying no. My priority is always making sure what we do for your skin is safe, appropriate and in your best interests.

So what is a hero skincare product?

Over the years I’ve trained with a wide range of specialist skincare brands and used many products in clinical practice. This has allowed me to build a carefully curated list of what I consider hero products across different brands.

These are products chosen based on specific skin concerns and conditions, and across different budgets. The best skincare routine is always the one you can stay consistent with, so it needs to be realistic and sustainable.

Anyone who has had a consultation with me will know that I also try to use products myself wherever possible. Skincare descriptions can sometimes be confusing, even for clinicians. Until you’ve used something, it can be difficult to fully advise how it feels, how to introduce it or how it behaves on the skin.

So my hero products aren’t chosen for hype. They’re based on evidence, personal experience and what I see supporting healthier skin over time.

If you’re noticing new spots along the jawline or sides of the neck, but the rest of your skin feels completely comfortable, it may not always be your skincare routine.

I recently reviewed a patient who had started a retinoid and was doing very well with it. Their skin barrier was stable and there were no signs of irritation, yet new breakouts began appearing along the sides of the neck.

The clue was in the timing. They had also started using a new leave-in hair product.

Oils, gels and leave-in hair products can sometimes be comedogenic, meaning they can clog pores, particularly where hair sits against the skin such as the hairline, jawline and neck.

When assessing breakouts, the location and timing often give helpful clues about what may be triggering them 🌿

When we think about ageing, most people immediately focus on wrinkles or sagging.

But research examining perceived age shows that uneven pigmentation, redness and skin texture strongly influence how old someone appears, often even more than lines or volume loss.

Structural changes such as fat and bone loss absolutely matter. However, without healthy skin quality, even technically excellent treatments may not deliver the result patients expect.

Healthy skin does not stop ageing.

But it changes how ageing is perceived and often improves the outcome of any treatments that follow.

Skin first. Always.

If you’ve noticed dark marks on the lower face or neck after waxing or hair removal, this is a very common pattern I see in clinic, particularly in darker skin tones.

This is known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).

PIH occurs when the skin produces extra melanin after irritation or trauma. Hair removal, inflammation or repeated friction can all trigger this response, leaving darker marks that may take time to fade.

The first step is always to reduce ongoing triggers and support the skin barrier. Gentle cleansing, barrier-supporting moisturisers and daily SPF 50 are key foundations 🌿

Treatment options vary depending on the individual and may include topical retinoids, pigment-regulating skincare, chemical peels or microneedling, etc.

In this case, we used a combination of microneedling and targeted skincare, and over a few months the pigmentation gradually improved.
