On Tuesday's episode of Super Surgeons: A Chance At Life on Channel 4, we met Professor David Nicol, Consultant Urologist and Chief of Surgery at The Royal Marsden NHS.

Professor Nicol said of working at The Royal Marsden:

“We work in a cancer institution so people having cancer is a normal for us. Everybody that comes into the building has a cancer. They all have their own story. And there are good outcomes and bad outcomes. And you realise that you go to any clinic, you're going to have a spectrum of patients and a spectrum of outcomes."

"I guess things balance because we are fortunate in seeing very spectacular, wonderful outcomes, but at the same time need to accept that that's not for everybody or we can't achieve that every time.”

If you watched episode 1 of on Channel 4 this week, then you've met Professor Andrew Hayes, Consultant General Surgeon and Surgical Oncologist.

We asked Professor Hayes about his special interest in sarcoma, and Isolated Limb Perfusion, which is documented in this week's episode.

“Sarcomas are extremely rare and can arise anywhere in the body. There are around 100 known types of sarcoma. It is because of this variety, and the rarity of sarcoma, that makes it very challenging and clinically interesting. Even after working in this field for 25 years, I still occasionally come across tumours or operations that I haven’t seen before.”

“Isolated limb perfusion is a really effective chemotherapy technique that allows us to shrink tumours. When the tumour is smaller, it allows us to do a smaller operation than might otherwise be necessary.”

You can read more about Professor Hayes' incredible work on our website.
