After watching David Beckham discuss his OCD & his need to clean his candles after each use as well as his need to always have straight chairs I wanted to post about OCD.
As a former OCD sufferer myself I know how debilitating & time consuming this issue can be to have
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is characterised by the presence of obsessions & compulsions that disrupt daily life. It is considered an anxiety disorder because the obsessions & compulsions generate intense anxiety and distress.
Here's an overview of the key features of OCD:
Obsessions are intrusive, unwanted & distressing thoughts, images, or urges that repeatedly enter an individual's mind. These obsessions are difficult to control & often cause anxiety or discomfort.
Common obsessional themes include fears of contamination, harming others, or unwanted sexual thoughts.
Compulsions are repetitive behaviours or mental acts that individuals feel compelled to perform in response to their obsessions. Compulsions are often rigid and are aimed at reducing the distress caused by the obsessions. Common compulsions include excessive handwashing, counting, or praying.
The Vicious Cycle: OCD follows a cycle where obsessions lead to anxiety & compulsions are performed to alleviate that anxiety. However, the relief is temporary & the compulsions reinforce the obsession, creating a vicious cycle.
Interference in Daily Life: OCD can significantly interfere with an individual's daily functioning. It can affect their ability to work, maintain relationships & enjoy life. People with OCD often spend a significant amount of time performing their rituals, which can be time-consuming & exhausting.
