📆 🎉 5 years of UnopenedMale 🎉 📆

1,825 days, over 200 posts and around £7,000 in therapy costs ago I launched this page 🤯

Looking back through some of my first posts it’s almost unrecognisable how different I talk about my mental health…

It’s also unrecognisable how few grey hairs I had but the less we talk about that the better 👨‍🦳

I’ve found it really difficult at times to be able to see the improvements and progress I’ve made but UnopenedMale has made that infinitely easier 🙌🏼

Back then I was opening memory boxes I’d forced shut years ago, unbandaging my scars for the world to see and connecting the dots of trauma to my behaviour 💚

These days I’m applying the lessons I’ve learned, experimenting with new ways of self-care and genuinely a happier and healthier version of myself.

This journey will never end but the work I’ve done and documented through UnopenedMale has allowed me to better avoid stumbling blocks and pick myself up quicker than ever before 💪🏼

As always, I’m immensely grateful to everyone of you who has been a part of this page that has changed my life and can’t wait to see what the next 5 years have in store 😍

I don’t think I acknowledge this community enough for the amazing work it does and how often it’s brought light into my life 💡

🎾🔥 Backhanded Confidence 🔥🎾

Managed to drag myself into the office for the company tennis tournament this week 🎾

Did I get absolutely cooked by the sun? Yes

Am I as good as I remember? No 🫠

But we still won the match so naturally I must still be Federer’s protégé 💪🏼

Even if I was puffing like a steam train by the end, it reminded me how much I love playing.

There’s just something about getting back into a hobby that lights you up 💡

It’s not about being good. It’s about doing something that gives your brain a break from the daily chaos 🎾🧠

Slowly getting back into the things I enjoy is one of the best things I’ve done for my mental health lately.

Highly recommend whacking a ball as hard as you can when life gets overwhelming 💥

🛋️🧠 No Longer a Couch-Based Organism 🧠🛋️

Spent most of last week battling an unholy alliance of cold symptoms and dramatic self-pity! AKA the dreaded man flu 🤧

Turns out, when your body says “stop” and you finally listen… it’s actually onto something 🧠💡

Being ill forced me to slow down. Properly slow down. A wrapped in a blanket, questioning everything while blitzing Netflix kind of slow down 🛋️

But after all that enforced rest, and some proper quality time with people who fill up my cup, I’m finally starting to feel like a semi-functioning human again 🧃

Might still sniffle every 15 minutes in an attempt for some sympathy, but my battery’s at least out of the red zone now. Progress!

If last week was about shutting off, this week’s about gently turning things back on 🔁

We pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and go again 💚

🧑🏻‍🦱⚡️ Choosing Myself ⚡️🧑🏻‍🦱

I was given some advice from somebody important recently that hit a bit different.

When your battery is low, you need to choose yourself.

Not because you’re being selfish.

Because you have a responsibility to protect what little charge you’ve got left 🔋

The problem is, I’ve always been better at trying to keep everyone else happy.

Worrying about who I might let down.

Pushing through when I should’ve stepped back 🙃

But choosing yourself doesn’t mean you don’t care about others.

It means you’re finally including yourself in the list of people you care about 💚

Still learning. Still reminding myself. But trying.

🧘🏻 🧘🏻 I need a chill system, not a nervous system 🧘🏻 🧘🏻

Can you imagine having a really chill system instead of a nervous system? Couldn’t be me 🙃

I’m always one bad nights sleep away from sheer panic at attempting the bare necessities that life has to offer 🐻

As much as I would love to sell my house and pay for that upgrade, it doesn’t currently exist so I’ve got to make do with the one I’ve got.

So then the question becomes, how do I best set myself up for success? 📈

The answer to that question is an ever evolving one that couldn’t be more different from person to person.

Right now my focus is on avoiding doing things in this very moment that will make future me want to shout at present me 💥

😴 💭 Depressed / Deep Rest 💭 😴

“You should think of the word depressed as deep rest. Your body needs to be depressed. It needs deep rest from the character that you’ve been trying to play.” – Jim Carrey

That quote hit me hard this week. I’ve been teetering on the edge of a depressive episode. Not quite in the thick of it, but tensing waiting for the (hopefully not) inevitable drop 🫣

I’ve been running on fumes ⛽ Showing up, pushing forward, trying to outrun it all. But the harder I try, the more I feel it draining me 📉

Maybe this isn’t something to fight. Maybe it’s something to feel. To not be afraid of it, but to welcome what my body and mind is crying out for 🔁

A break from the pressure. A break from pretending. A break from playing a version of myself that’s cracking at the seems 🎭

Time to slow down and embrace some deep DEEP rest 😴

🫂 🫂 Never too thug for a hug 🫂 🫂

I’m a hugger. Always have been. Always will be.
But apparently, once you hit a certain age as a bloke, hugs are replaced by weird head nods and awkward fist bumps 🙃

The whole “real men don’t show emotion” thing? Not for me hun.

I’ll keep choosing hugs over handshakes. Because sometimes a hug does more for your mental health than any “you good, yeah?” ever could.

So do as I do and catch your mates off guard. Hit them with a hug and confuse the sadness right out of them.
They’ll pretend they hate it, but deep down? That’s the serotonin kicking in 😌

⚡️ ⚡️ Thunderbolts* ⚡️ ⚡️

There’s a quote from the new Thunderbolts* film that hit me right in the gut:

“I have these good days, you know? Where I feel, feel invincible. But then there are a lot of bad days when I remember that nothing, nothing matters.”

Firstly, shock that I loved a quote from a Marvel film about mental health. But more importantly, that one line sums up some of my darkest moments better than I ever could 😶

I’ve had those highs — the fleeting days where everything clicks and it feels like I’m finally on the right path 💪🏼

But they’re often followed by crushing lows. The kind where the weight of everything just flattens you and you start to wonder what the point is. Where you’re not sad because something bad happened — you’re just empty 🫥

That back and forth can be exhausting. And sometimes the hardest part is not knowing which version of you will show up when you wake up tomorrow 💭

But here’s the truth I’m talking in existence: even when it feels like nothing matters… you still do 💚

You matter on your good days, and you especially matter on your bad ones.

🔋🔋 Recharging Your Batteries 🔋🔋

I’ve realised recently that I’ve been running on fumes. Not in the “I’ve been a bit tired” kind of way, but in the “everything feels 10x harder than it should” kind of way 😵‍💫

I used to think that taking time out to rest was the same as being lazy. But that mindset just kept burning me out over and over again 🔁

The truth is, recharging your mental health batteries isn’t optional – it’s essential ⚠️

Sometimes that means cancelling plans. Sometimes it means putting your phone on ‘Do Not Disturb’ for the day. Sometimes it just means allowing yourself to stop pretending that everything’s fine 😮‍💨

So this week, I’m prioritising rest without guilt. That doesn’t mean I’m giving up – it means I’m giving myself what I actually need 💚

Anyone else feeling the crash coming on? Let this be your permission to pause. Your future self will thank you for it 🙏🏼

🏡 🔑 My First Home! 🔑 🏡

Couldn’t think of a better way to make my triumphant return than with this huge life update… I’m officially a homeowner! 🥳

After moving back to Brighton just a few months ago, I’m finally in a place I can truly call my own. HOME. What a feeling 🏡

This has been one of my biggest long-term goals, and I’ve never been more excited to be hundreds of thousands of pounds in debt! 💷

I’m feeling incredibly grateful for the support, encouragement, and kind words that have helped me get here. This milestone means the world to me, and I can’t wait to start the next chapter in this space and share more of the journey with you all 💚

🗜️ 🗜️ Pressure 🗜️ 🗜️

Starting this new chapter of my life has brought with it a mountain of pressure to make progress in every area, tall the time ⏰

The voice in my head keeps saying: “If you’re not doing enough, you’re not good enough” 💭

Here’s just a glimpse of what I’m juggling right now:

👉🏼 UnopenedMale - Posting and engaging with content daily, building it into a business

👉🏼 Fitness - Hitting the gym, tracking my diet, and walking 10k steps every day

👉🏼 Mental health - Journaling, meditating, and reading consistently

👉🏼 Buying a house - Taking steps toward a big life milestone

They say that pressure makes diamonds. Sure… But it can also crush you under the weight of unrealistic expectations 💥

This post is my reminder: it’s okay to slow down. Progress doesn’t mean perfection, and not every problem needs solving today 🫂

You’re not a failure for not reaching 100% of your goals. Keep moving forward, even if it’s one small step at a time.
