The COVID-19 pandemic has seen a rise in the availability and endorsement of Ultraviolet (UV) radiation-emitting and ozone-generating devices claiming to 'kill' bacteria and viruses.

However, there are a number of experts and studies that highlight just how ineffective they are in 'killing' any type of virus, including SARS-CoV-2.

In light of this, Health Canada have released a new study that shows that not only are UV and Ozone devices generally ineffective, but they may also pose a serious health risk to users.

Some manufacturers claim that their UV air cleaner can “sterilises the air” and that the “air is disinfected” through the use of the UV light in their air cleaner. But is that true? Can a UV light air cleaner sterilise the air that goes through it? Are there any health concerns regarding UV ...

A major study has found that long-term exposure to air pollution increases the risk of death from COVID-19. Over 46,000 coronavirus-related deaths were analysed by the Office for National Statistics (ONS)and research showed that exposure to small-particle pollution increased the risk of death by COVID-19 to 6%.

Single-unit rise in exposure to small-particle pollution over previous decade may increase death rate by up to 6%

There is growing evidence that the focus on disinfecting surfaces in the effort to stop COVID-19 transmission should be shifted firmly to airborne preventative measures instead.
Since the start the start of the pandemic over a year ago, there has been ongoing research into SARS-CoV-2 transmission and the data suggests that contamination through surfaces is "rare." It has led to some scientists calling on the World Health Organisation (WHO, and other Public Health agencies, to issue clear guidance on the importance of good ventilation and also using rigorously tested air purification systems.

Catching the coronavirus from surfaces is rare. The World Health Organization and national public-health agencies need to clarify their advice.
