Casa De Luluel Handmade. Hygge. Handicraft. Holistic beauty and wellness. Digital tools and training for the Indie Cosmetic Makers.

Casa De Luluel School of Indie Cosmetic Makers is live! It has been my long time dream and passion to share knowledge for all aspiring (and why not established) home based cosmetic makers, and to help future and current sole traders and small businesses to steer their indie brands confidently through the regulatory deep seas of the UK ⚖️🙌🏼

My first online course is available at the Teachable platform, Selling Your Cosmetic Products in the UK: 5 Steps to Compliance 💻 The course covers basics of the UK cosmetics regulations, Cosmetic Product Safety Report (CPSR), Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP/ISO 22716), Product Information File (PIF) and regulatory notifications before placing a product in the market.

For a long time, the major global cosmetic brands have been lacking full transparency in their sustainability, ethical and health matters, while the consumers have become more environmentally and ethically savvy, demanding healthier cosmetics both for their skin and environment. This is where the indie cosmetic makers are answering to the demand, and more and more of the consumers are turning into small brands 👊🏼🛒

Having been in the indie maker's shoes for a few years I became sorely aware of the lack of sole trader and small business friendly training, tools and templates, which would not cost a fortune. Now I have turned my sole trader experience, personal tools, as well as my past knowledge as a certified ISO quality, environment and health & safety systems auditor to help others. Designing an indie maker-friendly training course on the UK cosmetic regulatory requirements was a natural step to take.

My love for the cocoa butter was revived today when I went through my ingredient stock. I opened the cocoa butter bag for a sniff - cause why not?! We'll, actually it was to check the butter is not going rancid... The lovely smell of cocoa reminded me why I love this stuff so much in my lip balm and hand balm! ✨💛

I'm a big fan of cocoa butter not just for the aroma and skin benefits, but how it can improve a soap or balm texture and hardiness. Having said that, cocoa butter can be a trouble maker too: it can crystallise and form tiny grains in the final product if not tempered well while melted☝🏼Additionally, the final product should be cooled down quickly to set and some recommended to do it in a fridge.🌡️

Cocoa butter is troublesome in other ways too. Way more serious ways. I'm keen to understand where my ingredients are coming from, not just in the geographical level but also in terms of their relation to the issues in society - ethics, sustainability and health around the growing and processing of the ingredients. ♻️ Global cocoa farming is suffering at the moment, skyrocketing cocoa prices. 🚀💵 Read more about the wonders of cocoa butter and the factors behind the global crisis in my blog 👇🏼

The third and last part of my 18 go-to multi-benefit essential oils is out and available in my blog 📝

I'm also sharing some insights on the topical application of essential oils, from the benefits to precautions☝🏼As the essential oils amongst other natural beauty and wellness products are gaining more traction it is important to remember that anything what's good for you might turn being bad for you if used in excess - always follow the safe dosing and dilution rules with essential oils ⚠️

Essential oils have become an essential (no pun intended) part of my daily life, whether it's about reducing brain fog (hello perimenopause!) or de-stressing ahead of bedtime. But how to choose the right oils for the right issue, or target system?🤔

By target system we mean the systems in our body, like respiratory and skin. There's a plethora of oils to choose from, so I have created a three-part essential oil chart for aid. This is my "cheat sheet" when I want to make holistic blends or just amplifying the benefits for a specific target system☝🏼

The chart can be found and downloaded from my blog 📥

Q: Why did you choose cypress, patchouli and bergamot essential oils for this soap?
A: It's not just the scent, it's also about the benefits!

All three essential oils we use in the Balmy Woods soap can have therapeutic actions on the nervous system, skin and respiratory system. Cypress essential oil is antimicrobial and astringent on the skin, while inhaling the aroma may alleviate coughing. Bergamot oil, like most citrus oils, can uplift the mood and is considered an excellent vulnerary, aiding the healing of damaged skin areas. Patchouli is known for its mind-calming and skin-hydrating characteristics, but it's also a respiratory decongestant.

So, you may have noticed Lulu's posting habits are quite random - sometimes multiple posts per week, some weeks none 🤷🏼‍♀️

Why is it so? We think the soap stacking video is the ultimate symbol of the daily juggling experienced by any small business owner, who also does another job to help to feed the family 👨‍👩‍👦

Just like those stacked soaps, it's a delicate balance between passion, hobby, real day job, daily chores and taking care of your offspring (not to mention about one's relationship) ⚖️ Priorities are clear (hello Maslow!), then the rest gets stacked somewhere in between, very gently and carefully, trying not to disturb the balance, the Ying and Yang ☯️

Peace, love and clean beauty,
Lulu 🌿🌺♻️💚

You may know chamomile tea for its tummy soothing and mind calming properties, but chamomile extract can provide same calming and soothing properties for a sensitive skin 🌼 That's why we combined it with the h**p seed oil for an ultimate skin soother✨ Like chamomile tea, the CO extract has a very distinctive scent - love it or hate it! In our Harmonius H**p face oil the scent of chamomile gets mixed up with the h**p oil and rosehip extract, balancing the smell of the end product. Chamomile benefits are known for centuries; the ancient Greeks and Egyptians applied crushed chamomile flowers to their skin to treat weather-related redness and dryness☝🏼

We've got those first signs of summer being behind the corner so it's time to shed off some dry winter skin 🧽🚿 Gentle dry brushing is great not just for removing the dead skin cells but to give a boost for the blood flow in the skin. Lulu is using her own exfoliating almond soap 🧼 with pink kaolin clay and apricot kernel powder, scented with cinnamon, peppermint, vanilla and sweet orange essential oils - organic, of course! 💯🌿

Should we bring this soap to our Etsy shop as well? 🤔
