First batch of the year 2025 (better late than never, eh?) came out beautifully and the formula works as expected despite the changes in the production - most notably, the country and a climate requiring more temperature and humidity control. Now it's time to wrap up the soaps and prepare for Christmas! 🧼🎁

I'm working behind the scenes to start selling online in Finland and Spain, for starters. There are still a few more steps to take -like finding the most reasonably priced delivery services- before I can set up the launch date.

After a long hiatus I'm back in the soap making! These gorgeous pieces of almond soap will be cured and ready just in time for the Christmas gifting πŸŽ„πŸŽ Year 2026 will bring a very exciting change to my small business when my soaps will become available again in selected online handicraft marketplaces - for the selected countries in the EU πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Ί A lot has been going on behind the scenes; finding new suppliers for the soap ingredients, tweaking labelling and making sure the soaps and their documentation comply with the EU requirements πŸ“‹βœ… Stay tuned!

Casa De Luluel School of Indie Cosmetic Makers is live! It has been my long time dream and passion to share knowledge for all aspiring (and why not established) home based cosmetic makers, and to help future and current sole traders and small businesses to steer their indie brands confidently through the regulatory deep seas of the UK βš–οΈπŸ™ŒπŸΌ

My first online course is available at the Teachable platform, Selling Your Cosmetic Products in the UK: 5 Steps to Compliance πŸ’» The course covers basics of the UK cosmetics regulations, Cosmetic Product Safety Report (CPSR), Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP/ISO 22716), Product Information File (PIF) and regulatory notifications before placing a product in the market.

For a long time, the major global cosmetic brands have been lacking full transparency in their sustainability, ethical and health matters, while the consumers have become more environmentally and ethically savvy, demanding healthier cosmetics both for their skin and environment. This is where the indie cosmetic makers are answering to the demand, and more and more of the consumers are turning into small brands πŸ‘ŠπŸΌπŸ›’

Having been in the indie maker's shoes for a few years I became sorely aware of the lack of sole trader and small business friendly training, tools and templates, which would not cost a fortune. Now I have turned my sole trader experience, personal tools, as well as my past knowledge as a certified ISO quality, environment and health & safety systems auditor to help others. Designing an indie maker-friendly training course on the UK cosmetic regulatory requirements was a natural step to take.

My love for the cocoa butter was revived today when I went through my ingredient stock. I opened the cocoa butter bag for a sniff - cause why not?! We'll, actually it was to check the butter is not going rancid... The lovely smell of cocoa reminded me why I love this stuff so much in my lip balm and hand balm! βœ¨πŸ’›

I'm a big fan of cocoa butter not just for the aroma and skin benefits, but how it can improve a soap or balm texture and hardiness. Having said that, cocoa butter can be a trouble maker too: it can crystallise and form tiny grains in the final product if not tempered well while melted☝🏼Additionally, the final product should be cooled down quickly to set and some recommended to do it in a fridge.🌑️

Cocoa butter is troublesome in other ways too. Way more serious ways. I'm keen to understand where my ingredients are coming from, not just in the geographical level but also in terms of their relation to the issues in society - ethics, sustainability and health around the growing and processing of the ingredients. ♻️ Global cocoa farming is suffering at the moment, skyrocketing cocoa prices. πŸš€πŸ’΅ Read more about the wonders of cocoa butter and the factors behind the global crisis in my blog πŸ‘‡πŸΌ

Confession: I'm a sucker for natural colourants in the cosmetics πŸ™‹πŸΌβ€β™€οΈπŸ’„ Particularly plant-based ones 🌿🌺

Natural colourants are wonderful for many reasons. Firstly, and for me most importantly, they usually come in their purest form without any preservatives or additives, thus providing a cleaner and healthier option to the synthetic dyes. They also provide skin benefits, like powerhouse-powder spirulina, a microalgae, which is high in antioxidants. Natural colourants provide endless colour options without sacrificing the healthy part πŸŒˆπŸ‘ŒπŸΌ Depending on the plant or mineral and how it is sourced, they can also provide a more sustainable option to the synthetic dyes ♻️

Natural colourants are mainly coming from the plant world and minerals mined from the earth, but some, like carmine, are insect-based.

Then there's mica. You may have heard or even used cosmetics containing mica powder. Mica is a natural mineral with excellent skin benefits, but I don't use it in any of my cosmetics. Why? Read more about colourants in the cosmetics and what makes mica troublesome from my blog πŸ“ Link to the blog in the bio ☝🏼

The third and last part of my 18 go-to multi-benefit essential oils is out and available in my blog πŸ“

I'm also sharing some insights on the topical application of essential oils, from the benefits to precautions☝🏼As the essential oils amongst other natural beauty and wellness products are gaining more traction it is important to remember that anything what's good for you might turn being bad for you if used in excess - always follow the safe dosing and dilution rules with essential oils ⚠️

Essential oils have become an essential (no pun intended) part of my daily life, whether it's about reducing brain fog (hello perimenopause!) or de-stressing ahead of bedtime. But how to choose the right oils for the right issue, or target system?πŸ€”

By target system we mean the systems in our body, like respiratory and skin. There's a plethora of oils to choose from, so I have created a three-part essential oil chart for aid. This is my "cheat sheet" when I want to make holistic blends or just amplifying the benefits for a specific target system☝🏼

The chart can be found and downloaded from my blog πŸ“₯

Q: Why did you choose cypress, patchouli and bergamot essential oils for this soap?
A: It's not just the scent, it's also about the benefits!

All three essential oils we use in the Balmy Woods soap can have therapeutic actions on the nervous system, skin and respiratory system. Cypress essential oil is antimicrobial and astringent on the skin, while inhaling the aroma may alleviate coughing. Bergamot oil, like most citrus oils, can uplift the mood and is considered an excellent vulnerary, aiding the healing of damaged skin areas. Patchouli is known for its mind-calming and skin-hydrating characteristics, but it's also a respiratory decongestant.

So, you may have noticed Lulu's posting habits are quite random - sometimes multiple posts per week, some weeks none πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

Why is it so? We think the soap stacking video is the ultimate symbol of the daily juggling experienced by any small business owner, who also does another job to help to feed the family πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘¦

Just like those stacked soaps, it's a delicate balance between passion, hobby, real day job, daily chores and taking care of your offspring (not to mention about one's relationship) βš–οΈ Priorities are clear (hello Maslow!), then the rest gets stacked somewhere in between, very gently and carefully, trying not to disturb the balance, the Ying and Yang ☯️

Peace, love and clean beauty,
Lulu πŸŒΏπŸŒΊβ™»οΈπŸ’š
