What do you ‘need’?
I think it is fair to say..... There are many things in life that we all want, but what do we actually need.. As human beings, in order to survive. Lets try to put them in order of importance;
1). Oxygen - The air we breath, has got to be number 1 right? If all of a sudden there was no oxygen, pretty much every living creature on earth would have less than a minute to live, so really the number 1 spot has got be a no-brainer. 2). Water - Ample hydration allows for the processes of the body to occur. Without water the body cannot process food or remove wastes. 3). Food - Our bodies need calories and a variety of essential nutrients including protein, fat, and carbohydrates everyday to grow, function, and repair. Without food, the body begins to atrophy. 4). Sleep - 7–9 hours of sleep every 24 hours allows the brain to process new knowledge and deal with emotional information. Without ample sleep we cannot learn new things or get past emotional pain. So we have ‘sleep’ as the fourth ‘need’ that is essential to our survival, but did you know, a human being would die from sleep deprivation before dying from hunger? So with that being said, I think we can all agree to move ‘sleep’ into the number three slot of our needs to survive. HOWEVER, recent surveys and research indicate that as much as 94% of UK adults fall below the minimum amount of sleep that is recommended by The World Health Organisation (7-9 hours for adults and 7-8 hours for those who are 65+), so I’m sure that most would agree, with those type of statistics, this is an underestimated health issue that more or less the whole general public have little or no knowledge of just how important sleep is to us. And after reading this we hope it inspires you to either share this information with others who may be in need of it or if you yourself have been encouraged to take action regarding your own personal health if it is suffering due to anxiety or sleeping disorders.
