Tincture prescription in the making, always exciting!
The term tincture refers to any liquid extract of a plant.
Many plant constituents dissolve more easily in a mixture of alcohol and water.
Tinctures are rapidly absorbed by the bloodstream and alcohol makes the herbal preparation more heating and dispersing in its effect.
The added advantage is that alcohol is natural preservative and allows the extract to be stored for several years.

Prescriptions can be given in various forms. Here are some common ways:
- Powdered versions are inexpensive and although they often don’t taste great, I quite like them because it is a good way to get the whole plant in direct contact with the digestive tract.
- Infusions are also inexpensive. They are a great way to take herbs that taste nice.
- Tinctures are herbs macerated in an alcoholic solution. They can be better at extracting active constituents in some plants and are often more concentrated. They are also very easy to take and great with herbs that don’t have a nice taste.
- And of course, the simplest and most ancient way to take them
is to chew the fresh plant or boiling them make to some tea.

Inula helenium, the herb of Helen of Troy, seen in lovely Brantôme…

Legend has it that it sprung up in the places where Helen’s tears fell when she was stolen away by Paris. Inula was brought to Britain by the Romans and the Celts soon adopted it and gave it a magical status.
In fact, Inula is a great lung clearer, it can reach deep into the lungs to clear and release old infected mucus. So it is good for bronchial and tracheal catarrh and many respiratory infections.

You can also use it as a digestive aid and a prebiotic.

Lime tree flowers are much used in France as a
Calming evening infusion
The truth is that these delicate flowers are great for
migraines and
anxiety linked to
hypertension and nervous tension.

Lime trees are overloaded with them at the moment,
waiting to be picked! Why not spend some time in the park?
