Heart Rate Zones: What Are They, and Why Do They Matter?

You might already familiar with heart rate zones from tracking your workouts or keeping an eye on your zone mid-run. But did you know that the zones given by your fitness watch aren't personalised to you?

A VO2 Max test provides accurate heart rate training zones based on your body's specific VO2 Max, the max amount of oxygen you can utilise during intense exercise.

Using personalised heart rate zones allows you to target your training, improve recovery, and work to increase your pace over time.

This post helps you to get to grips with the 5 different heart rate zones, their benefits, and when you should use them.

Let us know in the comments how you make use of your heart rate zone data in your training!

What is a healthy body fat percentage?

A healthy body fat percentage is 8-20% for men, and 15-32% for women. Your body fat percentage describes what percentage of your body is made up of fat, as opposed to muscle, bone, water, and other tissues.

A DEXA scan is the gold standard test for body fat and overall body composition, helping you to know whether you fall in that healthy range. If your body fat percentage is outside of this range, the priority will likely be to work on increasing your lean mass -- not necessarily jumping into a huge calorie deficit, which can lead to cutting muscle along with fat.

However, if you do need a calorie deficit to reduce your body fat, make sure to watch to the end for our top 5 tips on how to reduce your body fat percentage safely and efficiently.

As always, for more info on how My Vital Metrics can help you achieve your body composition goals, visit our website via the link in our bio.
