Morning walks down the dual carriage way at 1 degree Celsius ❄️☺️🙏🏼✨🌱

Plant medicines and allies abound, and ones that I commonly work with as a clinical herbalist!

Even here, amongst polluted and trodden walkways, nature works its wonders!

Here is who made my companion today😇 .... Chickweed, Dandelion leaves, Shepherd’s purse, Plantain, Yarrow and Cleavers! Gingko leaves at night on the high street last week.

What have you spotted on your lovely wintery walks this season? 🍁🍃🍂

Hawthorn for the Broken Hearted💔♥️

Back in the summer of 2017, prior to my Herbal diploma, I was totally heartbroken. A parting beyond control; quite tragic and unfortunate in circumstance.

After hearing Hawthorn can impart the gift of grief support, I called upon this dear plant ally for a helping hand (or branch). Reverently, I harvested both flowers and leaves and made up a tea for myself. And my goodness, what a journey it took me on!

As a sensitive soul and person in general, I should have known better than to work with such a large dose 😅. My heart was unleashing all! Physically and energetically, a lot kept shifting that entire day and I was slightly taken aback to say the least. I had no choice but to sit with myself, within the turbulence of my inner storm 🌊

Until the next morning, I wasn’t quite sure what to make of it all. Sitting up in my bed, I soon became quite aware that something in my heart-space had shifted; feeling more resolved, settled and quietly peaceful. I was amazed to have experienced the workings of Hawthorn from within, which gratefully sparked the process of heart-mending.

I have since learned that sometimes a lot of emotional energy can be evoked if wounds of the heart are fresher (hence my experience being on the eruptive side). Important to bare in mind in relation to recently experienced traumatic events, in which emotional processing may be too overwhelming or destabilising, especially if there is an innate lack of ability to regulate emotions and experience a felt sense of safety to begin with. In such instances, it can be better suited to collaborate with Hawthorn a little further down the line, alongside a practitioner or other therapeutic support.

Hawthorn aids in opening the heart, resonant with a heart that may have become guarded or embittered through trials of love or tribulations of life. Gently, one begins to renter the flow of giving and receiving love. There is a softening, whilst the thorn energy allows for some ‘protection’ and boundaries to enter the picture during the experiencing of sensitive emotions, which naturally increases a sense of vulnerability.

To be held and supported by the plants is an incredible blessing and a birth right to us all 🙏🏼

Hawthorn ~ Crataegus spp.

Protectress of the Heart ✨♥️✨

The Hearts of Man & Womankind have been through a lot these past few years, to put it lightly.

Thank goodness for the intelligence of nature which has been bestowed upon us!

The plant ally Hawthorn has incredible relevance in these times, tending to our hearts (and circulation) on all planes: physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

The berries, leaves and flowers are all worked with as medicines, not to mention the simple yet profound medicine of basking in the presence of this majestic tree 🙏🏼🍃

On a physical level, hawthorn protects and strengthens the heart muscle & blood vessels, prevents blood clots and heart attacks, normalises the heartbeat and assists in regulating blood pressure; raising when low and reducing when high.

Hawthorn is helpful for many cardio-circulatory conditions, along with anxiety, poor memory, specific digestive issues, insomnia and working on a whole other intangible level too.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Hawthorn is considered a Shen tonic. The heart is said to house the Shen, which is defined as the consciousness, spirit, essence or mental health of the person. Healthy Shen is recognised by the presence of ‘light’ in the eyes; a ‘sparkle’ and a person living in harmony, with the capacity for vision, wisdom and insight. In contrast, a diminished Shen appears as ‘dullness’ in the eyes or a lack of overall presence, along with scattered or unsettled behaviour.

This especially relates to the effects of physical or emotional trauma which can lead to a Shen disturbance. Traumatic experiences often lead to a dissociation from the body; ‘cutting off’ - a protective trauma response or learned behaviour commonly acquired in the formative years, equating to less presence, as often evidenced in the eyes.

Hawthorn can assist us in connecting with and settling back into our spirit💡

As mind, body and spirit are unified, it is clear to see that physical disturbances are often rooted elsewhere. Plant medicines such as Hawthorn have such scope and depth as to interact with and address all levels of our manifestation in this reality.

Welcome to Yarrow Soul ✨😊✨

So, what’s the story behind this name?

It was incredibly important for me to pick a business name which truly resonates; something with depth, meaning and spirit.

During my herbal studies, it was known that we were to write a dissertation in the final year which focused on clinical trials - not my forte 🙈

Thankfully, after many years of the previous theme, we were offered the option of researching and writing in-depth about a particular herb from a specific angle. That opened up options, but I really wasn’t sure where to go from there.

Then one day, I went to my local park, sat myself down on a seemingly ‘random’ spot and suddenly noticed a single, tiny corymb (flower head) of yarrow growing right in front of me. I glanced all around and couldn’t see the presence of yarrow anywhere else in sight.

It literally felt as though we were being introduced! Yet, I couldn’t quite understand why.

As soon as I got home, I opened up my copy of Flower Power by Anne McIntyre. I was astonished to discover why we had been brought together. Everything I read just so happened to mirror the exact intricacies of my then present challenges.

The section on yarrow flower essence mentioned it was suited to individuals who needed support with protection or shielding from negative outside influences, whether related to environmental illness or psychic vulnerability.

I had recently started to experience sensitivity to EMF, feeling depleted after spending time in crowds or busy places, along with psychic interference (if you know, you know 🙈). Yarrow is described as the herb of invulnerability, clarifying boundaries between people and strengthening the self.

This experience moved me deeply; witnessing a resonance between plant and person, united for a particular purpose. In an era full of disconnection, it was so powerful to evidence some of the magic and Soul of this world.

Yarrow was the first herb I truly Connected with and eventually wrote about.

And hence, ‘Yarrow Soul’ was born 🙏🏼✨
