Could it be DLD? 🤔

Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) affects how people understand and use language, yet awareness of it is still surprisingly low outside of the speech and language therapy field.

In this post, Deborah, our Neurodiversity Service Lead, shares her experience working with children and young people with DLD and explains some of the signs to look out for. Children with DLD may struggle to understand instructions, learn new vocabulary, form grammatically correct sentences, or follow conversations. These difficulties can also affect social interaction and learning in the classroom.

DLD is lifelong and is usually identified after the age of five, once it becomes clear that language difficulties are persisting rather than resolving as part of a delay.

If you’re a parent, teacher or SENCo and some of these signs sound familiar, it may be worth asking the question: Could it be DLD?

Speaking to a Speech and Language Therapist can be the first step in understanding a child’s language profile and accessing the right support.

Today is World Hearing Day, led by the World Health Organization (WHO) 👂🏾🌐

This global awareness day highlights the importance of ear and hearing care, early identification, and ensuring accessible support for people of all ages.

At London Speech Therapy, we recognise the important connection between hearing and communication — while also celebrating that communication takes many forms! Whether it's through spoken language, sign, AAC, gesture or multimodal communication, every person deserves to be understood.

Our approach is:
✔ Collaborative
✔ Neurodiversity-affirming
✔ Family-centred
✔ Strengths-based

We focus on building skills, confidence and communication-accessible environments — rather than viewing difference as a deficit.

If you have questions about hearing and communication, or would like to learn more about how we can support you or your child, please get in touch!

Come and see what we’ve been up to!

Yesterday's SENCO training was packed with great conversations, shared experiences and plenty of insightful discussions. It was fantastic working alongside our SENCOs and creating space to reflect, question and learn together.

We explored:
- SLCN strategies to support learners in the classroom
- Neurodiversity and inclusive practice
- Gestalt Language Processing (GLP) and AAC
- Outcome measures
- Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)

There was such a positive buzz in the room - collaborative, thoughtful and focused on making meaningful impact for the children and young people we support.

Thank you to everyone who contributed so openly and enthusiastically. We’re excited to see these ideas put into practice!

The government’s new SEND White Paper sets out proposals for improving support for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. This will include dedicated funding from the £1.6 billion inclusion grant to deliver proven programmes like small group speech and language support to respond to the most commonly occurring SEND needs.

We are encouraged to hear this news and look forward to hearing more about these plans and how they will be delivered. Providing better access to educational psychologists and speech and language therapists can only be a good thing for pupils and their parents and carers. However, we are conscious that the paper raises many questions and concerns for parents and teachers alike – particularly around the introduction of individual support plans (ISPs); phased changes to ECHPs; and what will be expected of schools and early years settings moving forwards.

At London Speech Therapy we know that uncertainty can be challenging for families and children who rely on communication support. As discussions continue, and everyone digests what’s in the paper, we remain committed to:
* Supporting children to develop confidence and their communication skills
* Guiding families through therapy options and education plans
* Supporting school leadership teams and SENCOs where additional resources are required
* Advocating for consistent, accessible services that meet every child’s needs.

Tell us your thoughts on the SEND White Paper in your comments below. How could these changes affect your child, your school or children you work with?

Linh grew up bilingual in Vietnamese and German, later learning English and continuing to explore new languages - including Spanish and Somali.
Her fascination with language led her into speech and language therapy.
For almost 11 years at LST, she has supported children with autism and motor speech disorders, and is now developing her work with adults with Parkinson’s, aphasia, stammering and speech clarity needs.

We are so proud to have her on our team! 💙

Did you know - Stammering / stuttering:

✨affects more than 5% of children (who will have a period of 6 months or more of stammering)
✨affects 1 in 100 adults
✨ is not caused by anxiety or nervousness
✨ typically starts between ages 2 and 4 years
✨ will resolve in most of these children on its own BUT early support can make a huge difference to confidence and communication

Typical characteristics of a stammer
✨repetitions of a sound e.g “b-b-ball” or whole word repetitions e.g. “can can can I have…”
✨stretching sounds e.g. “sssock”
✨getting stuck / blocking on a word e.g. “—-mummy’
✨These differ from developmentally appropriate ums and pauses.

It might help to seek support if:
✨it’s been going on for a few months
✨your child is getting frustrated
✨there is a family history of stammering
✨you’re feeling worried or you’d like some help on how best to help your child.

Trust your instincts 💛

Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us here at London Speech Therapy and we’ll arrange a free consultation with a Specialist SLT to talk through your concerns and advise on whether an assessment is recommended. Following an assessment next steps will be discussed. The therapist’s recommendations might include:
✨therapy for your child to work on their speaking
✨indirect support for you as parents / caregivers
✨a visit to your child in their childcare setting to provide staff with strategies to support your child
✨or more of a wait and see approach might be suggested, following some strategies you can put in place at home.

All of this will be discussed and agreed with you at initial assessment.

If you’d like further information or to arrange a free initial consultation, please get in touch.

All rounded off with LST branded cupcakes 🧁

Grateful for a team that keeps learning, reflecting and growing! Happy half term everyone! 💙

It’s Children’s Mental Health Week 🩵

At LST, we know that children’s emotional wellbeing and communication are deeply connected. When children are supported to understand and express their thoughts and feelings, it helps them feel safe, confident and regulated.

That’s why our work focuses on:
• emotional vocab
• visual supports
• evidence-based tools like Zones of Regulation
• working alongside parents and teachers

Supporting children’s communication is supporting their mental health!
