Breakfast cereal: Nutritious food or unspoken danger?
The big cereal debate, are those morning bowls doing us more damage than good? Is broken down in a recent BBC Future feature.
In actuality, not every cereal is made equally. Some are ultra-processed, full of refined grains, added sugar, and artificial tastes, but many are fortified with vital elements like fibre, iron, and B vitamins.
The risks? Sugar spikes, Crashes in energy and Long-term links to chronic conditions
Conversely, whole grain options such as porridge oats, muesli, and low-sugar granola provide superior digestive support, longer-lasting energy, and a lower glycaemic impact, particularly when topped with proteins and healthy fats like nuts, seeds, or yoghurt.
Expert advice: Don't let the box's frontal health claims influence you. Turn it over. Examine the label. Goals should include:
• 6g fibre per 100g
• Real, recognisable ingredients
Simple breakfast adjustments could have a significant impact on mood, blood sugar, and long-term metabolic health.
