“Brain Health and Disability: Leave No One Behind”~ World Brain Day 2023

World Brain Day aims to spotlight five key components:
• Prevention
• Awareness
• Access
• Education
• Advocacy

This day which is celebrated globally on July 22 each year is a day to increase awareness about brain health and neurological disorders. The theme this year seeks to encourage global collaborations to bridge the gaps in disability education and to break down barriers to health care that exist for individuals with disabilities.

Brain disabilities affect every age group, ethnicity, gender and socioeconomic status but can be prevented, treated, and rehabilitated.

Frequently prescribed for mental health conditions, benzodiazepines are psychoactive drugs used to treat illnesses like anxiety, insomnia, and seizures. Long term users of benzodiazepines are liable to develop physical dependency and withdrawal symptoms. To address this concern, World Benzodiazepine Awareness Day is observed on July 11 each year. This observance was initiated by activists who survived benzodiazepine injury to encourage medical practitioners to ensure patients know the side effects and dangers of long-term use.

Here are some dangers associated with long term use:
* Increased risk of dependence: The risk of dependence is higher with higher doses and longer durations of use.
* Tolerance development: With prolonged use, the body may develop tolerance to the effects of benzodiazepines. This means that higher doses may be needed to achieve the desired effect, which can increase the risk of adverse effects.
* Withdrawal symptoms: Abrupt discontinuation or rapid dose reduction after prolonged use of benzodiazepines can lead to withdrawal symptoms. Withdrawal symptoms may include anxiety, insomnia, irritability, tremors, sweating, nausea, and in severe cases, seizures.
* Cognitive impairment: Memory, attention and concentration may become impaired in individuals that use benzodiazepines for a prolonged period of time.
* Emotional blunting: Some individuals experience a decrease in emotional responsiveness while taking benzodiazepines.

World Blood Donor Day is an annual observance held on June 14th to raise awareness about the importance of safe blood donation and to thank voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving contributions. The day serves as an opportunity to promote the availability and accessibility of safe blood for transfusion and highlight the critical need for regular blood donations to ensure a reliable supply for patients in need.

The objectives of World Blood Donor Day include encouraging more people to become regular blood donors, promoting the importance of voluntary blood donation, advocating for the implementation of effective national blood donor programs, and raising awareness about the need for safe blood and blood products for transfusion.

The theme for 2023 World Blood Donor Day campaign is “Give blood, give plasma, share life, share often.” It’s focus is on patients requiring life long transfusions and highlights the role we can all play by donating blood or plasma regularly

Thirty years ago today, Nigerians exercised their right to vote for a leader of their choice. This was after several years of military dictatorship.

Although the election was annulled. MKO Abiola was considered the winner by all indications in what was said to be the most free and fair election Nigeria had ever had.

Today we celebrate victory after a turbulent journey towards democracy. May the labor of our heroes past never be in vain.

Mental Health Awareness Month which is marked in May, serves as an opportunity to educate the public about different mental health conditions, such as depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and eating disorders. It also highlights the importance of seeking help, understanding the signs and symptoms of mental illness, and supporting individuals who are struggling with their mental health.

The 2023 theme is "More Than Enough." The National Alliance on Mental Illness chose this theme to remind the world of the inherent value of each of us. To say that no matter what, you are inherently worthy of *more than enough* life, love and healing.

Let's come together to educate, support, and empower one another, as we strive to build resilient communities that prioritize mental health for all."

“Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer”, the theme World Hypertension Day 2023, highlights the need for increased awareness of hypertension among various populations worldwide. While hypertension is a common incurable chronic condition, it is manageable with lifestyle adjustments and medication. World Hypertension Day spotlights the need to pay attention to blood pressure levels.

About 1.28 billion adults aged 30-79years are living with hypertension and out of these, about 46% are unaware that they have this condition. Statistics also show that only about 21% have this condition under control.

Risk factors for this disease include:
* older age
* genetics
* being overweight or obese
* not being physically active
* high-salt diet
* drinking too much alcohol

While there are quite a number of medication available for managing this disease, World Health Organization’s Guideline for the pharmacological treatment of hypertension in adults identifies some research gaps, some of which are;
* A need for better data outcomes from trials that include heart failure and cognitive impairment among others
* A need for more evidence from Low and Middle-Income countries as well as other non-North American and European countries
* A need for improved understanding of the cost-effective tests needed to be conducted for improved outcomes.
