A brilliant CPD session earlier this week with the team at Hytro on Blood Flow Restriction therapy. πŸ’ͺ

We have been using BFR in clinic for a while, but this session with Nicola Graham and Dan Howells helped us fine tune how we apply it across the full patient journey: from pre-operative preparation right through to return to sport.

The research backing BFR is growing fast, and Hytro are at the forefront of it. Used correctly, it is a genuinely powerful tool for helping patients build muscle strength and recover faster, with very few contraindications.

We will be integrating it more widely into our pre and post-operative protocols and our tendinopathy programmes going forward.

And a lovely colleagues reunited moment for Paul and Dan, who used to work together at the English Institute of Sport. 😊

πŸ‘€ Watch this space: we are planning to host a Hytro event at the Lansdowne Club later this year for sports medicine doctors and orthopaedic surgeons. More details to follow.

What does it really take to prepare the human body for 270km across the Sahara Desert?

Earlier this week, Sarah and Jane Baker attended an excellent evening hosted by Profeet in London exploring the physical demands of the Marathon des Sables β€” one of the world’s most challenging ultra-endurance events.

A huge thank you to Pierre Meslet, ultra-runner, osteopath, and elite multi-stage racer, for sharing valuable insights into load management, heat adaptation, fuelling strategies, and sustainable movement under extreme physiological stress.

We also heard from Paul O’Malley (), Podiatrist and Running Lead at Profeet, whose practical discussion on foot preparation and blister management highlighted the importance of detail in performance and injury prevention.

At Physio Remedies Ltd, these conversations closely reflect the work we do daily with runners and active patients: bridging rehabilitation, biomechanics, performance, and long-term tissue resilience.

Whether preparing an athlete for ultra-endurance events or supporting recovery after injury or surgery, successful outcomes depend on integrating evidence-based rehabilitation with a deep understanding of movement demands.

It was a fantastic evening and a great reminder of the value of collaboration between physiotherapists, podiatrists, osteopaths, sports medicine clinicians, and orthopaedic specialists in helping patients perform at their highest level.

Knee pain at the front of your knee? It might be more than just "runner's knee." 🦡

Patellofemoral pain (PFP) is one of the most common knee complaints we see and one of the most misunderstood. Because it's rarely caused by one thing alone.

Here's what's usually going on:
πŸ‘ Weak glutes β€” when your hip doesn't control movement well, your knee drops inward and the kneecap takes the load
πŸ’ͺ Quad dysfunction β€” delayed or weak quad firing changes how your kneecap tracks in its groove
πŸ‘Ÿ Foot and ankle mechanics β€” overpronation and restricted ankle mobility both affect how load travels up the chain
πŸ“ˆ Training errors β€” too much, too soon, too fast
πŸ”Ί Hoffa's fat pad irritation β€” a highly sensitive structure behind the kneecap that's easily overlooked

At Physio Remedies, we don't just treat where it hurts. We find out why it's hurting β€” and build your recovery around that.

Struggling with knee pain? We'd love to help. πŸ’™

We get asked this a lot: "Does shockwave therapy hurt?"

Here's the straight answer: you may feel some discomfort - but it's short, controlled, and very much worth it.
βœ… Sessions typically last just 8–12 minutes
βœ… Intensity is adjusted to your personal tolerance throughout
βœ… Discomfort fades quickly once treatment ends
βœ… Most patients tell us the temporary sensation is a small price to pay for the pain relief and functional gains that follow

If shockwave therapy has been on your mind but uncertainty has been holding you back - this is your sign.

Just run a marathon? Here's what your body actually needs next. πŸƒπŸ’™

The soreness fades. The medal goes on the wall. And most runners feel the urge to get back out there within days. But here's the thing β€” feeling fine on the surface doesn't mean your body has finished its repair work underneath.

Here's comprehensive post-marathon recovery guide, backed by current sports medicine research, to help you navigate the weeks ahead with confidence.

The guide covers:
βœ… A 6-phase recovery plan from race day to full return to training
βœ… Why you still need rest even when you feel okay
βœ… A week-by-week strength training timeline
βœ… Warning signs that mean you should slow down
βœ… Key recovery principles to carry into your next training block

Post-marathon injury rarely happens on race day. It happens in the week that follows - when runners feel recovered, return to training, and find that their body wasn't ready.

The physiology explains why. Muscle damage markers remain elevated for up to 6 days post-marathon in recreational runners. Systemic inflammation persists for up to 8 days.

Tendon stiffness paradoxically decreases around Day 3, increasing vulnerability to load at precisely the point many runners feel well enough to resume activity. Neuromuscular deficits - reduced strength and coordination - outlast delayed onset muscle soreness by several days. And a well-documented window of immune suppression in the first 3–72 hours post-race elevates infection risk in an already physiologically stressed system.

The clinical implication is straightforward: subjective recovery and physiological recovery do not run on the same timeline. Patients who understand this distinction recover better and present less frequently with post-marathon tendon and stress injuries.

For patients requiring post-marathon physiotherapy assessment, tendon management, or a structured return-to-sport programme, we welcome referrals from GPs, sports medicine physicians, and orthopaedic consultants.

Thinking about booking a physiotherapy appointment? Here's what you can expect when you come to Physio Remedies. πŸ’™

We know that choosing the right physio can feel overwhelming - especially when you've tried treatment before without the results you were hoping for.

At Physio Remedies, we do things differently.

Every patient who walks through our door sees an experienced specialist physiotherapist from the very first session.

No juniors. No generalists. Just clinicians who genuinely know their area inside out.

We take the time to understand your whole body - not just the part that hurts.

Because lasting recovery comes from addressing the root cause, not managing the symptoms.

You'll have access to our purpose-built rehab gyms and studios, and you'll receive clear, honest guidance throughout your recovery - no jargon, no guesswork.

We're also trusted by some of London's leading consultants and sports physicians, who refer their patients to us knowing they'll be in safe hands.

If you're ready to take the first step, we'd love to hear from you.

Our team had the great privilege of supporting Snow Camp Charity at their Three Valleys Rally and we came home truly inspired.

Snow Camp is a truly special charity, using snowsports to transform the lives of young people from inner-city communities. Through the mountains, they build confidence, resilience, teamwork, and a sense of possibility that extends far beyond the slopes.

Being part of that - even in a small way - was something we feel very grateful for. The energy, the spirit, and the sheer determination of the young people involved was something to behold.

We're happy that despite the best efforts of the slopes, there were no major injuries on our watch. πŸ˜…β›·οΈ

Thank you to everyone at Snow Camp for having us. It was a genuine privilege. πŸ’™

April is Stress Awareness Month β€” and this year we want to talk about something that doesn't get enough attention: what stress actually does to your body.

74% of UK adults have felt so overwhelmed by stress that they couldn't cope.

And for many, that stress doesn't stay in their head. It ends up in their shoulders, their jaw, their lower back, and their sleep.

The good news? Understanding the connection is the first step to breaking the cycle.

Movement, manual therapy, and breathwork can all make a real difference.
