HRV (heart rate variability) is a simple marker of how well your nervous system is recovering and adapting.

One of the simplest ways to support HRV is something you can do anytime:

👉 😮‍💨 Make your exhale a little longer than your inhale.

Just a couple of minutes of slower breathing can help your nervous system settle and shift into recovery.

We often notice the difference quickly, less wired, more grounded, clearer thinking.

Mental fitness isn’t about forcing calm.
It’s about giving your system small chances to stand down during the day.

And you don’t have to wait until you feel stressed. Practising this regularly helps build those mental muscles over time.

Where could you build in a 2-minute pause today?

If you track HRV (heart rate variability) on a smartwatch or fitness app, you may have had this moment…

HRV is a simple marker of how well your nervous system is recovering and adapting.

Ever looked at it and thought:

“I’m not even that stressed… so why is it low?”

HRV reflects more than obvious stress. It picks up on the total load your nervous system is carrying, from poor sleep and constant mental busyness to emotional pressure and back-to-back days with no pause.

A low HRV doesn’t mean anything is wrong. Often it’s just feedback - your system hasn’t had much chance to recover.

So a good question to sit with is:

Where in your day does your nervous system actually get to reset?

Next up: one simple practice we’ve found genuinely helpful.

It’s been a little while since we’ve shared here, and lately we’ve found ourselves coming back to a topic we think is so helpful: HRV (heart rate variability).

Most of us assume stress shows up as feeling stressed… but often, it shows up first in the nervous system.

We’ve been paying more attention to HRV because it gives such a simple window into how supported (or stretched) our system is, and how easily we can return to balance in the middle of busy weeks.

And honestly, we’ve noticed it in ourselves too - those times when everything looks “fine” on the outside, but the body is clearly asking for a reset.

Higher HRV is often linked to better recovery and resilience. Lower HRV can be a sign your system has been running “on” for a while.

We’re going to share a short series on HRV over the next few posts, because it connects so closely with mental fitness.

Next up: what actually affects HRV day to day.

As the year wraps up, it’s ok to slow things down. A well-rested mind is one of the best gifts you can give yourself. Take a little time to pause and recharge - your mental fitness is the foundation for everything you’ll do in the year ahead.

Wishing you a really lovely festive season.

This is a follow-up to our last post on Saboteurs.

We’ve all got them - and they sneak into our days in ways we barely notice.

Think of Saboteurs like backseat drivers in your mind.

They shout directions, slam imaginary brakes, and second-guess every move - making you feel stuck, stressed, or off-track.

The tricky part? They think they’re helping.
The key isn’t to fight them - it’s to catch them in the act.

The moment you notice a Saboteur, you’ve already weakened it. That awareness gives you the choice to pause, breathe, and take back control.

👉 Save this post so you can spot them faster next time
