For over a year now, I've been using a temporary wheelchair since an airline broke mine. But now I've got wheels that work and a frame that fits, I'd like to introduce... CeCe!
She gives me lots of freedom and independence in both my home and work life so I've done a little FAQ below if anyone's interested π
Why do you use a wheelchair?
Because walking is dangerous and painful for me. Lots of things can (and do) go wrong, and I injure very easily when spending too much time on my feet.
Can you walk?
Yes! But not well and certainly not for long or on rough terrain. Some days are better than others like most things with a dynamic disability.
When did you start using a wheelchair?
I was 16 when I got my first chair and I chose to do so then as I had the money to buy it, place to store it, and reason to use it! All of my doctors advised me against drama school and after 6 months there, my body really wasn't coping well so I needed more support to carry on my training.
What's your disability?
I don't share my diagnosies publicly but it's primarily a joint condition with LOTS of comorbidities that affect my MSK system and its alignment. There's also GI problems and physical symptoms of my mental health issues, some of which are covered by the term 'neurodivergency'!
How did you fund your wheelchair?
I bought the first one out of pocket, and my travel insurance covered the second. There's a great scheme called Access To Work that helped me get this one, as I need it in order to continue my career and couldn't keep performing or teaching without it.
How can I help when you're in your chair?
Don't! There's something called the charitable model of disability and it's not very widely accepted by people in the community for a reason. Only help if I explicitly ask you to, don't assume I need it. No, not even if I look like I'm struggling. If you're really desperate, then ask if I need a hand as you would to anyone not in a wheelchair and respect whatever answer you're given. Usually it'll just be opening doors or reaching things off the top shelf!
